I needed a bed for one night when travelling from Argentina to Uruguay. This was a simple, clean place, adequate for one night. Owners/personnel was friendly and helpful. Sufficient restaurants in the neighbourhood and walking distance from the ferry.

We booked 2 nights a few months out using a "secret deal" on booking.com - so it was 50% off - something like US$72 for 2 nights. And jolly lucky it was cheap. We arrived after checkin time to be told a small room was ready, but if we wanted the bigger, better room, we had to come back in 30 minutes to an hour. The small room was dark, had no natural light and very dingy. The "big and better" room, was right behind the reception counter also had no natural light and was equally dingy. We took a look around the property and there was a sun filled room out in the garden with actual windows. It was not made up, but they agreed we could have that room. We came back, settled in in the evening and were quite happy right up until we dared to use the shower in the small bathroom. It literally fell apart - the hose came away from the tap and was completely useless. It was a freezing cold night, so by the time we whipped clothes on and went to complain, we were a bit grumpy. We asked if we could shift into a quad room that was empty but that had big windows and actual light. No way, No Fear, No how - we were on a cheap rate and basically told we should be grateful and that the plumber had been working in the garden room and it wasn't their fault the shower broke and we should have taken the original room offered. We queried why we couldn't use the quad room (only planning to use one bed) given it wasn't booked at all, but it all came down to the money and they became very abrupt and started speaking only in Spanish (even though they speak perfectly good English) and eventually when we saw we weren't getting anywhere with the concept of goodwill we shifted into the big room behind the reception. At this point, the blonde owner said she didn't want us there at all and we should leave immediately and go onto the streets and find out for ourselves just what a wonderful deal they had been giving us. This was ridiculous, it was a cold night, we'd be travelling most of the day and it was too late for us to be worrying about this rubbish. I eventually had to fall on my sword and apologise profusely for daring to lose my temper, let alone daring to do it in English (because after all "We speak spanish here"). Basically, Colonia is a nice spot for a day trip - but the restaurants are dear, the hotels are expensive and if you're budget will only allow you to stay in this place - don't bother coming at all. Breakfast? such as it was, served in a very cold dining area - just sugary cornflakes, pretend juice, some toast and croissants - no fruit, no eggs - everything is done on the cheap. They offer cheap rates to get you in then resent your presence.
