I stayed here for four nights because it was the conference hotel for an academic conference I attended. I booked the most inexpensive room but it was large enough for my needs, very clean and well appointed. The hotel staff was highly professional and courteous throughout my stay. I appreciated there was a small but well equipped free fitness center within the hotel. The hotel restaurant is located several buildings over within the complex, which includes a business school. The food was very good and the wait staff attentive, but I think it only serves buffet style. The bustling V&A waterfront is located several hundred yards away and I felt comfortable walking back to the hotel at night by myself, but had read online that Cape Town is not a city in which to wander around by oneself. I rented a car because I travelled outside of Cape Town before and after the conference, and was pleased that the car parking fee was only 25 rand per day. Wifi access was free but a bit annoying because you have to re-log on every time you turn off your device/Iphone.

I usually stay at the City Lodge near by, but I wanted to try the Protea.
From a location point of view, nothing to say, it is close to V&A and you can walk to the harbor.
The hotel itself is a different story. The rooms are small, the bathroom cleaning standards are not the best I have seen. The place really lacks of charm. The rooms building and the restaurant are separated by the business school building (the former harbor jail) and in the winter cold morning it is not the most enjoyable start of the day.
The cooked breakfast food is okay, but everything is so salty, often the way to hide a poor quality.
I tried it but will not go back.

Very clean hotel, good location. 10 min walk to V&A Waterfront. Shuttle available during the evening. Pleasant helpful staff. Good laundry service. Good selection for breakfast including eggs cooked to order.

Protea hotel is pretty decent property in way of size. Rooms are quite small and just enough to rest for your trip. It also has business school campus and you can find students and staff all around. Also this place has some interesting history behind it. But the best part about the hotel is close to waterfront. Although mine was a business trip but saw many families checking in at the hotel. Overall would say a nice place for weekends.

This was our second stay at this Protea Hotel and we enjoyed it as much as last time. The hotel has character, being in a converted army barracks. The rooms are comfortable, clean and quiet. The toilet/bathroom is in a frosted glass enclosure which could be uncomfortable depending who you are sharing with!
The hotel is within easy walking distance to the V&A Waterfront and is easy to reach by car from the freeways of Cape Town. There is also good parking on site.
Breakfast, although a bit pricey, is a good spread and excellent variety. Staff at reception and in the restaurant were all very friendly and helpful.
This time though we tried to book on the hotel's own website rather than a third party site - won't make this mistake again as the process was much more difficult than on other sites and payment was difficult, with us receiving multiple emails reminding us to pay after we had already done so.
