English country estate pampering - ideal for exploring top end of South Island

    NomadinSydney on 09/10/2017 01:22

We stayed 4 nights in one of the luxurious rooms in the main house. Peter and Bobbie are genuine hoteliers of the 'quickly become friends' kind -- they definitely understand six-star pampering and Chilli helps also to take the stuffiness out of meeting initial strangers.

Peter and Bobbie have created an artistic and elegant country estate environment that lets everything flow smoothly with nature being the hero: scrumptious, fresh breakfasts and dinners custom cooked by their chef, using veges and ingredients from the garden and paired with informative education by Peter on the local wines; I-wish-I-could-design-like-this English furnishings in room and throughout the house (also Bobbie's paintings); afternoon tea and cakes served on the veranda steps and lovingly-designed natural gardens (which we must return during Spring to see when in full bloom).

Edenhouse is located about an hour out of Nelson towards the Abel Tasman National Park; ideal luxury base for touristing in this part of the country. Definitely recommend visiting Beth from Himmelsfeld Winery (her family history and how she developed a passion for winemaking is a fascinating story) and the Ngarua Caves in the Takaka Hills.

Don't miss the opportunity to stay at this secluded haven if you love the experience of country estates and gardens and genuine high-quality service.

    Haven or heaven?

Edenhouse is a peaceful, secluded and beautiful land haven nestled on the border of Kahurangi National Park and Abel Tasman National Park. The hosts, Peter and Bobbie, are most welcoming and attentive to their guests. They truly make you feel as if you were part of the family. We stayed in the cottage next to the main house , which was very comfortable. The meals were exquisite, cooked by a masterful chef, accompanied by beautiful local wines. Drinks and meals were served in the main house.
Edenhouse is for the discriminate traveler looking for a personalized experience and true kiwi hospitality. Peter helped us organize the day’s activity and maximize the time we had to discover the region. Our only regret is that we only spent two nights at the Edenhouse and should have planned to spend at least 3 if not 4 in order to see more of the parks and the Nelson region. Next time!
This is a boutique guesthouse but don’t let the word guesthouse mislead you. This is truly a luxurious experience.

    Best NZ experience

Peter and Bobbie have created an inn that has it all--character, charm, elegance, attention to detail, delicious food and a near perfect attunement to the needs of their guests. From the moment we arrived, Peter anticipated our wishes and met them. So, when he heard that we wanted to hike up a mountain despite the snow he arranged for someone to drive us up and accompany us. He was always there, not intrusively but responsively. Julie, who did most of the cooking, is a gem. She is a gifted chef who tailored her meals to our preferences while also surprising us with her own creations. Our best meals in NZ were here, and we tried valiantly to find excellent food elsewhere.

Being at Edenhouse is beyond delightful. The grounds are gorgeous, the rooms incredibly comfortable, snacks are left out without charge, as are nespresso machines along with milk frothers. All this creates a sense of being at home rather than being nickel and dimed. We can't wait to come back!

    Far Beyond.....

Bobbie and Peter (and Chilli too) provided an experience far beyond anything we were expecting! With Edenhouse they have created the warm, inviting, personal experience that all good hosts should strive for.

Our rooms were immaculately appointed. Nothing was overlooked. The cuisine was farm fresh. Fresher than anything I've experienced in all of my travels. The staff was engaging and keyed in to our every need.

Well done Bobbi and Peter! And thank you for such a lovely introduction to New Zealand hospitality!

    We'll be back!

    Perfect? No. Beyond charming? Yes!

I came to review with a four because there are some things that just don’t work for us BUT when we saw the perfect record of excellence – and make no mistake this is a fabulous place - we would have felt like we were kicking the delightful Chilli (guest relations Labrador if you haven’t read any earlier reviews) if we spoiled the pristine record.
All the good is exactly as said in all previous. This place is amazing. It is a kind of hotel Narnia where you drive through the gates and just feel great. The garden is just a delightful riot of colour and rabbits and birds entertain everywhere you look. Peter and Bobbi are ‘super hosts’ with an effortless ability to predict your wants, organise your time and most importantly fill your wine glass.
There is the slightly scary option to eat with your fellow guests but also an opt out (managed perfectly do not fear this) with private dining experiences scattered in the grounds (weather permitting) and inside if not. This gives the best of both worlds – in our two night stay we enjoyed a wonderful dinner with company and an almost as pleasant dinner in a gazebo in the garden.
However, this is an expensive stay and there some things that made me not initially award it full marks.
Bathrooms. Who has carpet in a bathroom? Not a thing that we have seen for a while and while there is absolutely nothing unhygienic about this gorgeous, pristine place – really did not like. Also a bath with a shower over is just not luxury and very much like staying in a friend’s spare room rather than a hotel.
Bedrooms. This is really a (massive) private house not a guest house or hotel so we can hear our neighbours’ voice and TV – even though we have two doors between us. We are in one of the two rooms (suite is stretching it – it is a huge bedroom with a sofa and desk) in the main house. When we return (and we hopefully will) we will take the cottage.
But these are niggles and intended as constructive. The whole package is just A1. We stay in lots of hotels and this goes down as a memorable favourite.
