What People are saying

Unfriendly to the Disabled

I'm writing to drag the Residence Inn Bethesda for its abysmal treatment of guests who are either disabled, elderly, or in need of physical assistance to get from a vehicle to the hotel's entrance. We stayed here for four nights in May for a college graduation, with an elderly relative who has difficulty walking long distances owing to prior knee and ankle surgeries. Every single time that we would try to park near the hotel's entrance to let this individual out of the rental car so that she would not need to walk very far, the front entrance was either blocked by a car-service limousine, or by a car that the valet service was parking. Not once, in about 12 trips to the hotel's door, were we able to let off our elderly relative without some sort of hassle from the valet service. I understand that the hotel may contract the valet parking service to an independent contractor over whom the hotel management does not have complete control, but this situation is inexcusable, dangerous to guests, and just plain rude to the disabled or elderly. The hotel's entrance is on a very, very busy side-street off of Wisconsin Avenue, and there is no other place to pull off of this street other than the hotel's small driveway. Every time that we arrived at the hotel's entrance, there were at least two limousines parked there, which, as far as I could tell, never moved, were never hired by a guest, and just blocked otherwise usable space. It's as though the hotel's management intentionally designed the front entrance to create stress and frustration for every person who was not using the valet service, or hiring one of the limousines. I've never seen such an inefficient and non-user-friendly arrangement in an urban hotel. I will never stay here again, and would recommend to anyone who asked to avoid this property.

Overall quite a few positives but not very memorable.

The Residence Inn is located a short walk to Bethesda metro station on the red line. The breakfast buffet area is very crowded but it is free and fills the gap. The rooms are spacious and separate to the renovated kitchens, which include a dishwasher and microwave. The WiFi is also free but on the slow side – however free WiFi is unusual. There are many high quality shops (clothing and liquor stores) and restaurants in the area and the Roundhouse Theater is only one mile away. One issue was an alarm that awoke us at an ungodly hour – could it be fire alarm training so early?. We also had to vacate the building due to an actual fire alarm on a very cold day – quite a trek coming down by stairs but that was just bad luck.

High expectations not met

My husband and I are Marriott Platinum members and enjoy Residence Inn properties because they are (1) the only Marriott properties with kitchenettes and (2) there is consistency in decor, etc. You know what you will get. Pleasant garnet walls with wood trim, etc. at each one where we have stayed; an upscale vibe without the exorbitant price. Not here. Every wall in our room and bathroom was a different color (from each other). A room sorely in need of renovation. The toilet kept flushing itself because the tank ran out of water and had to noisily replenish itself at will. You couldn't turn on a tap in the bathroom sink (esp. the cold faucet) without water seeping beneath the faucet and soaking the counter top so we had to create a barrier with a towel in order not to destroy our toiletries/cosmetics. Fluorescent lights in the bathroom not conducive to female travelers who need to apply makeup for business meetings. We had to request dish soap for the kitchenette. The price of food at the lobby concierge "grocery" was not marked. So when we got the bill it was a 300% markup from retail. One of 2 elevators was not working on our final day. There was also a yapping dog in a nearby room. Very disappointed in this hotel, particularly for an upscale area like Bethesda MD.

Some things to know

1st, the hotel is in a great location. The complimentary breakfast is much better than most and rooms are always spotless. However, they do charge for parking and if you're staying on the weekend there is a parking garage right around the corner that is free (only on weekends). The hotel won't tell you that, but now you know.

Not impressed

This is our 3rd or 4th time staying here for business, mostly because of location. This time staying for 5+ days (a week more to go), really not impressed. If you had used the pen, soap, or laundry bag the first day you got there, they won't replace any of them even 5 days later and worse yet, even after you had talked to the front desk manager. We actually bring them lots of business, they just aren't that great. The worst is internet, snail pace, never changed over 7 years. If you are in the Bethesda area for business and care about internet speed, would not recommend staying here.
