A cross between western and ryokan

This establishment is showing its age but it is in a very nice spot with ocean view from every room and walking access to the town and beach (from the roof). The rooms are spacious with western style beds and a sitting area in the traditional Japanese style with a low table and tatami mats. There are futons in a cupboard which you can set up as a bed in this area if you so desired. The bathroom is tiny by western standard and a tall or large person will have problem using the facilities without bumping into the fixtures. Storage is limited.
Separate onsen for male and female are available onsite. Ditto a good Japanese restaurant as well as a small shop.
With this style of hotel it is very much a case of managing expectations. You can experience a taste of a Ryokan but it is only a taste and if you are expecting a standard western hotel then you will find some oddities which may take some adjusting.

After two decades in Japan and going to Atami rather than Hakone for the most part this is our favorite hotel. The regular rooms are cozy and suites spacious. The water is so close you can throw a rock into it from each room. At night you can hear the ocean crash up to the rocks and sleep well. The hot springs are excellent. Hands down my fav....

Stunning location

Situated right on the seafront Rooms have balconies and lovely views.
Room was large with a typical Japanese low table seating area.
Bathroom was very tiny, not enough room to dry off after a shower unless you went back into the bedroom.
We had a traditional Japanese evening - Kimono , belts and shoes are provided and we gathered for a typical Japanese meal.
The hotel has an Osen, single sexes, towels are provided, very strict rules regarding tattoos - if you have a tattoo you will not be admitted as the Japanese associate tattoos with the mafia gangs !!!
A nice shop on the ground floor behind reception.
Roof top bridge leads you to the main town, a short walk down the rod to the small beach and harbour front.

Great ocean view and spa facility

We stayed here for 1 night to meet old friends coming from Tokyo. This is a older hotel, but has great location, built in front of a cliff and overlooking the ocean. Each spacious room has a tatami seating area facing the ocean. Single beds were comfortable, and entrance to the hot spring bath (Japanese onsen - included in room rate) was on the fifth floor - very nice and clean facility. Our room rate included Japanese dinner and breakfast buffet - very delicious and full of wide selections. Hotel is just 15 min walk to the famous Atami beach. The only unfortunate part of this hotel is the rather noisy car passing on the highway running between the entire length of the hotel and the ocean, and the noise affected all of the rooms as all rooms face the ocean. The room rate was rather high, but so is everything in or near Tokyo.

Old but clean hotel

I think the hotel needs a big renovation since wherever you go you notice here and there signs of how old the hotel was established. I could not deny that the hotel is clean and since it face directly to the ocean, the scene was beautiful. I doubt that the hotel is on walking distance from JR Atami Station since it was located quite on the left edge of the beach. But not to worry, shuttle bus from and to the station is prepared by the hotel for free and it runs at 30min interval starting from 10am to 3pm.

The receptionist was nice and professional. My room was a combination between western twin bed and a small tatami living room located on the 8th floor. I also tried the onsen and it was reasonably clean. Using the opportunity, at night I drank at the bar served by a very pleasant bartender.
