Nice room

We stayed two nights in a double room. Nice room very clean and lovely view of the golf course. Good en suite and comfortable bed. Breakfast was ok but would have been better if butter rather than spread was on offer. Juice was low quality as well. Evening meal was nice but again little things would have made it much better, more choice, butter, warm bread....
We are not golfers so we didn’t use the golf course. However it looked quite busy. There was a lovely cellar games room with full size snooker table which we did enjoy!
A shame because a few simple changes would make all the difference.
Highly enjoyable dinner

This club, which is open to the public, has a 'colonial' atmosphere that reminds me of former British clubs in India.
We chose to eat in the bar area rather than the much more modern restaurant. In the bar area, you can choose from both the bar and restaurant menus.
My bavette steak was first-class. My wifes beef and ale pie was both generous and tasty. Our friend ate a chicken dish that pleased her very much.
Service was very attentive and friendly. George at the bar was a great host.
This is a peaceful place for a pleasant dinner.
NB we only dined here; we did not use the overnight accomodation.
How to spoil a little gem

Stayed here in late October with a golfing group. Have been several times in the past including last Christmas. It seems the management have been greedy in allowing too many people to play the golf course - we ended up taking 5 and a quarter hours to play and having to wait for one or two groups before us on every tee.
The hotel used to be unique - friendly staff - a limited but excellent menu, comfy room and an atmosphere of traditional English charm.
They have turned the dining room into a Bistro - long menu but none of it very good, grey wall, leather banquettes and no curtains - horrible! Elsewhere the hotel needs some basic maintenance. Some staff were firndly and efficient but others quite offhand. We ate in the Lakesdie room as a group and the service was appalling and the food lukewarm byt the time it got to us.
I doubt if we will go back again but what a shame!
Great golf course

We visit Thorpeness to play golf 3/4 times a year and always marvel about (a) how dry it is no matter what the weather is and (b) how well maintained the course is.
Our usual course in Essex is built on Essex clay soil and is a bit sticky as soon as the autumn arrives. It’s the opposite here, hence the reason for the hour or so travel time to play on forgiving sandy well drained soil.
The course is a good test for golfers of any standard but, beware if you’re not a straight hitter as the gorse (which lines a number of holes) hurts !
Long and straight will get you a good score here, and there’s no excuse for poor putting on very true greens. The most testing holes are 3,4,12,15 & 18 for me.
Just love playing here and wish sometimes that I lived closer so I could visit more often.
After the golf, the locker rooms are well equipped, and the bar/restaurant are a nice place to sit and mull over where it all went wrong on the course !
If you’re looking for a lovely golf course in Suffolk, you’ve got to visit Thorpeness, check out there deals for golf, dinner, B&B they’re good value too.
What a Shame this used to be So Good!

We have been coming to Thorpeness for about six years, always at the same time of year. Our reasons for coming are that the food was very good, the rooms comfortable and the golf course always playable.
However, It looks highly likely that we won’t be back next year.
The food in the reastaurant was always one of the best features, however, this time it has been poor. Lots of supplements on the menu. My main course of salmon was very good but my starter and dessert were both very poor. I had sticky toffee pudding for dessert which was served cold! My starter of Beef Carpaccio was very cold, watery and tasteless.
Breakfast, usually excellent, was very poor. Full English: bacon was cold, egg was cold, in fact none of it was that hot. The male staff were positively rude when we eventually managed to get their attention for more drinks or toast.
There was a large party in for the evening and most of the staff were employed I. Looking after them and not the other guests.
The noise levels in the restaurant in the evening was atrocious. We were a party of eight and could not hear anything anyone else at our table was saying.
Over the years we have noticed a gradual decline in this hotel service and food.
