The room was very clean the whole time. It has a great location where you can wal to pretty much evertything downtown and very close to subway and train station. Breakfast was always yummy and the bar downstairs is great to meet people and have some drinks!
My only complaint is that people at the front desk weren´t that nice
Older Generation of Hostel but Overall Comfortable

This hostel is a part of "Hostelling International" (HI) franchise, so it is more of an older generation of hostels. Generally you pay extra per night's stay if you do not have a membership (for here, it is actually quite high at C$5 extra per day). It is also not as fancy as some newer generation of hostels with curtains offering privacy for each bed and electronic cards as both room key and in-room lockers et al.
I stayed in a room with more than 10 beds, so it is relatively cramped. Though there is no real lockers in the room, there is a small security box (which you can lock with your own passcodes) on the wall for each bed. The bathrooms/ toilets are outside the room but they are generally small and the space is tight.
Since they still use magnetic cards as room keys, they do not work well all the time. In my 3 days' stay, I needed to go downstairs to get a new card at least twice after my card was demagnetized. The kitchen is not small but sometimes still get too crowded.
I do feel this place is quite pricy. Even with a membership card, it still cost more than C$40 in a room with more than 10 people - and breakfast is not included.
Good things about this place is that the location is quite good. It is around the corner from a Metro/Subway station (King Street) and near a park and the historic St Lawrence Market. The street it faces, Church Street, is not too noisy at night (so you generally can have a nice night's sleep)
Another plus about the place is its basement bar "Cavern." Since breakfast is to included (unless you stay in a much more expensive private room), this is the nearest place where you can have breakfast.
Overall I would recommend it, though maybe only half-heartedly. I do not think HI Toronto is among the best choice for backpackers if you can find availability in other hostels (possibly cheaper, or newer but with comparable prices) in town.
Great place to stay

A really nice hostel with all the facilities you could need. They have really good discounted tours of the city and for Niagara which are a lot cheaper than buying directly from the tour companies. The breakfast in the bar is really good and included in the price too. It's in a good area of the city and not too far to walk to the main attractions either. Not the most modern hostel but still good value.
Great place to crash on a short break

Stayed for 2 nights whilst sightseeing in Toronto. Provided everything you could need, a comfy bed, good well priced food and drink in "The Cavern" downstairs and a friendly atmosphere, with something always going on!
DON'T GO THERE!

BEWARE! Someone broke in the rooms last week. Stealing passports, computers, cameras and important documents from people. DON'T GO THERE! They didn't want to show the cameras to the police. Be really careful!
