Fabulous Spa Experience

Ann B on 18/09/2017 16:02

If you're looking for a little pampering while in Chicago, include time for a massage or facial at the Ruby Room, a delightful spa conveniently located in the fun and trendy Wicker Park neighborhood. My daughter, friend and I scheduled massages and facials with Logan (massage therapist) and Claire (facials) and we all loved every minute of our time at the Ruby Room. Besides the fact that Logan was one of the best massage therapists I've ever had, the whole aura of the spa with soothing crystals, music, scents and a caring staff made the experience truly special. Hoping to make this a regular stop in my Chicago travels.

A great urban oasis!

We've stayed at the Ruby Room twice now within the past couple of years. It is a charming inn attached to a new-agey kind of spa. We've stayed both times in Room 4D, which is up several flights of stairs. Not a problem, but if you're looking for an elevator, you won't find it here. The room itself is quite comfortable and has a fire escape/balcony with a beautiful view of the Chicago skyline. There is a kitchen for guests' use one floor down -- small refrigerator, coffee maker, a few pots and pans. We kept mostly breakfast items in the fridge, as we were eating out a lot for lunch and dinner. Good value, too - not terribly expensive and just a couple of blocks from the subway. Uber/Lyft are easy to summon as well.

Mixed Thoughts

I was in room 3D. The room itself was nice and clean. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was good.

The room I booked said it had a private balcony... well that balcony turned out to be the fire escape that I could walk out to from my room. No chairs or anything to sit on and very much not private. So that felt a bit like false advertising.

I also think that they need to be upfront about the rooms and access to them on their website. If you have 9 rooms, list them out with pictures under your section of "Room Details" (take pictures of each room and the staircase). I did read somewhere on the website about it not being accessible for the disabled, which I did take to mean there wasn't an elevator. But you have no idea that all of the rooms are on floor 3 or 4 and the very narrow STEEP staircase to get there. It was difficult to haul luggage up and down.

Back on the plus side it was very quiet and I got good sleep there.

I did not use any of the spa while I was there so I have no comment on that aspect.

DO NOT STAY HERE.

Be prepared to haul your luggage up at least two flights of steep narrow curving staircases. No one is around in the evenings for any needs. I pulled back the comforter on the bed and the sheets had clearly been slept on-- hair and dirt clearly visible and the sheets were all rumpled. Called the "emergency" after hours number three times and no one called me back within an hour, even when the answering service put the issue as emergent, saying I was locked out of my room. I couldn't get in the bed and by this time it was almost midnight. I packed up my luggage and called my credit card company to refuse to pay for the four nights I had reserved. I Hotwired a different hotel and waited outside in the rain for Uber after dragging my luggage down the stairs again. No one called me back until the next morning but it was pointless to talk to them at that point. Avoid this place like the plague.

Has great potential

Stayed one night on a recommendation, as we were celebrating a birthday. The garden room had a very odd configuration with 4 queen beds, which was overkill for the 2 of us. Bathroom was completely insufficient, shower door was broken and there were no towels or shampoo. Nicely decorated though so we would recommend it to others that are ok with an adventure.
