Faulty Towers

We were charged €150 for the night for a little suite. The sower had no shower head, the fan and Mosquito net did not exist, all the towels and bedding was damp and the coffee machine did not work. You also have to have your breakfast in the room which was substandard.
The only good thing about the place was the swimming pool area.
Fabulous!

Beautiful house, old, atmospheric.....felt like we were transported into a Italian book, mid century. Fabulous pool, added bonus of coffee and lunch by the pool. Didn't mind at all the locals who also use the pool, all so civilized.
The place is magical. Eleanor was a wonderful hostess. It felt like we were at home.

We stayed for one night in two attic rooms. These are very spacious: more like suites in any other hotel. Fans are provided to mitigate the hot Tuscan nights. The bathrooms are big with good showers. Original features abound. The beams in the ceiling are quite amazing.
The pool is clean, warm and a good size. It has a diving board and is attended by a person who will see to all of your needs. While we were there is was visited by locals who were not staying at the hotel which made for a wonderful atmosphere which the whole family enjoyed.
The continental breakfast was good and plentiful. While the restaurant was not open for dinner, Elena, the hostess, was quick to make reservations at local Pizzerias for us.
Grazie Mille.

Anyone looking for an unusual and beautiful place to stay near Pisa, Lucca, or Forte dei Marmi need look no further than the Villa Montecatini. This is a place which has character in spades. Most of the original features have been retained in excellent condition - murals, sofas, beds and other furniture, prints, porcelain. Breakfast is served in a magnificent two-storey room - a buffet with fresh bread, aged parmesan, and soft folds of local ham. You'll find pacious suites with pretty, modernised bathrooms; lush be-statued gardens; and a warm welcome from the owner, a truly memorable stay. Popular local restaurants, Lo Spietato and Le Meraviglie need to be booked on Friday and Saturday nights. Food at the walkable-distance Le Bernadone is excellent - try the house starters.
Go time travelling! An experience not to be missed with a friendly and welcoming hostess.

We were walking the Via Francigena and wanted somewhere to stay between Pietrasanta and Lucca. The Villa Montecatini in Nocchi is only a short distance from the VF, but uphill, and when we arrived we were hot and tired. We were met on the drive by Elena, the owner, who was brought up in the property.
The entrance is round the back - you step into a cavernous entrance hall, with the office at one side. We were shown up to our suites on the first floor, both of which had a spacious sitting room with a tiled floor, and a large bedroom. Our bathroom was attractively furnished (see photo), although the shower was a little small and had a curtain (definitely time travel there). We had views across the grounds to the hills beyond.
Elena very kindly offered to drive us to a nearby restaurant (the Bernadone, reviewed separately), and arranged for a lift back for us.
We slept well - the beds were comfortable and the rooms cool despite the heat of the summer.
Breakfast brought to mind Downton Abbey. We were in the huge room overlooking the front drive, with large doors opening onto the double flight of steps at the front of the mansion. There were trompe l'oeil murals on the walls, and breakfast was arranged on a circular table in the centre of the room under an extremely large chandelier. We were the only guests, so sat in solitary splendour! There was juice, cheese and meat, muffins, eggs, home-made jam tart and yoghurts, along with bread, toast and tea or coffee.
The advantage of walking uphill to a night stop is that it's downhill in the morning! This was a wonderful place to stay, made even more special by Elena's kindness and helpfulness.
