stay at the Sarem before a group tour

I found the staff at the hotel very friendly and the rooms comfortable (I had a single room as a double bed for the first 2 nights and then a twin room for the next 2 nights whilst I was with a group prior to doing a trip.
The rooms were clean and comfortable, yes hot water, drier and new bottle of water supplied each day
Buffet breakfasts were excellent with a wide variety of local and continental - had evening meals there on my own
As with a lot of places throughout Ethiopia with a group meal they find this difficult to deal with - mainly as tourism has not hit Ethiopia in a big way yet, but this does at least add to the charm of the country.
Whilst the staff were obliging and again as with most of Ethiopia, English is not widely spoken and menus do have both local and English on the menu but many staff do not write things down so rely on memory for a big group is difficult (there may be a literacy problem too) - but this may change as tourism and technology catches on!!
The complimentary hotel pick up from the airport arrived several minutes after I had arrived through immigration and customs which is not the speediest (at which I was beginning to panic) - and be warned it is easy to get ripped of with taxis and only use the yellow ones and negotiate a price if you have not arranged the pick up service - the hotel minibus is white and is clearly marked with the hotel name
The hotel is not really central to many places to visit and if you wished to go anywhere there is a taxi rank just outside the hotel and also ATMs next door
Again, not that I used it much but Wi-Fi is limited and can be frustrating and is free and can be slowed down when everyone is trying to get on to it
average hotel for passing through

the room I had was on the 5th floor and facing the road, at night it was very noisy, the next day I requested to be moved to the slightly quieter rear facing side which the receptionist did for me no problem. breakfast was good, and the bar was nice too. the staff were friendly and helpfull
Pretty good given the circumstances

I was in Ethiopia during a state of emergency, so not everything was working properly (e.g., social media was blocked, ATM/credit card machines not always working).
Having said this, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Sarem. The room was clean and very nice (really comfortable bed), and well appointed (hair drier, shampoo/conditioner, safe deposit box, TV with limited channels). I was there for a meeting, and catering was great. There is a nice bar and the restaurant had great food, except for one small misunderstanding that almost left me going to bed on an empty stomach. But eventually it was fixed. Wifi was working most of the time.
Language was a bit of an obstacle as not all the staff speaks English. The same goes for taxi drivers, so the concierge (who might also speak limited English) usually negotiates the price; taxis are not metered. We didn't go out much, but taxis are readily available outside the hotel. Breakfast and airport transfers might be included, depending on the rate you pay.
Some of my colleagues had issues when checking out because the credit card machine was not working, so the only option was cash. Be prepared.
OK

The rooms are very clean and quite nice. The staff is very nice and accomodating. It is reasonably close to the sights in Addis and there are taxis up front the hotel at all times.
However, eventhough there was a transfer booked for me from the airport to the hotel nobody was waiting at the airport. When I called they've told me because my group was arriving the day after they didn't know they had to pick me up. I've booked the room and the transfer in April and was travelling in November....When I arrived at the hotel they didn't know of my reservation eventhough it was confirmed. This was annoying.
Next day when I wanted to enquire about how to get around they've told me different prices to rent a cab. First it was cheaper suddenly it got more expensive....I recommend you don't organise a taxi through reception. Just haul one yourself and bargain the price. The next day I paid half of what I had to pay when the reception oraganised a cap for me.
My travels with the group didn't start until 3 days later. So when the day arrived they've just cancelled my keycard and after breakfast I couldn't enter my room anymore. No one told me about a room change.
Also, the internet they advertise to be board band isn't really board band at all. It is really slow.
So, yes it might be good hotel to stay for business purposes however, I wouldn't recommend it to stay there for pleasure.
Comfortable and friendly. 2

Quire differently to my previous stay (see my review with a similar title), now I was renting a suite for several months as my temporal place of living in Addis Ababa.
The hotel amenities and impressions I already described earlier. Now I would like to share my opinion about its staff. Being in Addis this time, I had heart attack, and my friends urgently delivered me to International Cardio-Vascular Centre at CMC General Hospital. Immediately they put me to Intensive Care Unit. The Centre has not only modern equipment, but also excellent team of doctors and nurses. During one night, they made a miracle and succeeded to restore the normal pulse rate, and I started to prepare for a "check-out" from the hospital.
But here I have got my first portion of surprise. Three persons including registration desk manager - entire delegation from Sarem Hotel - came to visit me at this hospital. Never ever I expected hotel staff to take such a care about their clients. Second surprise was more impressive. The Centre's cardiologist prescribed me a particular cordial medicine that have helped me to restore my pulse. However, the medicine is very rare in Addis Ababa. And here the staff of Sarem Hotel made another favour. After several hours of search, the same team succeeded to find the medicine by visiting dozens of pharmacies.
I will remember this case entire my life, and I will tell this story to everybody to share what hotel staff I met. I really appreciate the attitude of the personnel of Sarem International Hotel I met, led by General Manager Mr Girum Legesse, for the care I have got during my stay.
