Lovely room, gardens and view

Our recent stay at Il Minareto, a former monastery that was given a “moorish” makeover well over a century ago, was a very pleasant and relaxing one. When we arrived well before check-in, the friendly and helpful staff accommodated us in a lovely room in the main building that overlooked the spectacular terrace and gardens.
Il Minareto is located just outside of the centre of Narni. Our walk into town took about 20-25 minutes and involved hills up and down, but we quite enjoyed it. There is a large parking complex in town and a free navette (except on Sunday) that stops near the hotel.
Narni is a fascinating city, with a wonderful historic centre. Very interesting and frightening is the tour of the Narni Underground – a fairly recently discovered network of subterranean rooms which include a chapel as well as rooms used for torture, trials and incarceration during the Inquisition. The small cell, with walls and ceiling covered in centuries old dates, names, drawings and messages, is haunting and quite difficult for those who are claustrophobic. (The tour is in Italian only, but an English information package is provided.)
We enjoyed our stay at Il Minareto immensely. Our only disappointment was that the hotel does bed & breakfast only and does not have a restaurant for lunch or dinners. (The hotel complex is geared to catered events and the grounds certainly provide a wonderful setting for romantic weddings.) Breakfast was very good, but it would have been quite simply wonderful to have an evening meal on the terrace, with the view overlooking the magnificent countryside.
