Excellent stay - the basement room was good value, the location perfect, near the Beihai park and the Houhai lake. The staff unbelievably helpful. The Chinese breakfasts were very filling. The hutong is very picturesque - not all are.
Fantastic place in Beijing

A must when in Beijing for pleasure! Great location in Beijing.
The snack/restaurant street Hugusi is very close. Not to far from a Forbidden city and Tiamen square (North West corner)
The place is a gem, located in a hutong that is difficult for taxi to reach but worth every single penny. True old style hutong with great rooms. Bed is very hard and comfy, great breakfast that you eat in the courtyard. Stayed in one of the rooms facing the courtyard and enjoyed every second of it.
Again! A must if you visit Beijing for pleasure.
Best stay in Beijing!

It was my 15th trip to Beijing and my best experience of staying in a huntong hotel.
Very friendly, peaceful, nice and well managed. My kids loved it and said that if one day they go to Beijing once again, this is the only hotel they would consider!
Wonderful hotel to experience real Beijing

Following the previous positive reviews we chose this hotel for our Beijing base. The staff are really friendly and helpful. The rooms feel like stepping into history with modern ammenities. If you dont mind walking,it's about 20/25 mins to the forbidden city and you get to walk past a beautiful park on the way. The subway is only a couple of minutes walk if you dont fancy the walk there. We found it close enough to all the attractions without having a faceleaa corporate feel which was perfect for us. The local food is amazing and worth trying. We didnt find anywhere that apoke English, but we got by. If you turn left out of the hotel and walk 10m you'll reach a main road. On the opposite side of the road is a sublime bbq restaurant. They bring you your own charcoal pot and iron skillet to cook your choice of meat and veg on. Highly recommended. If you want real Beijing, stay here,if you want to feel like you're still in the west with KFC etc on your door step it's probably not the hotel for you
Beautiful, friendly hotel with great staff

We spent 3 nights at the Shichahai Sandalwood Boutique at the beginning of July.
The rooms were booked by a friend who chose the hotel so as we could have a traditional Chinese experience, we were not disappointed!
Located in the "hutongs" (alleyways) to the north of Beijing, it's somewhat bleak exterior transforms into an amazing courtyard hotel with rooms running alongside all four sides of it. Each room is traditionally decorated and the courtyard provides for a comfortable relaxation area with air conditioning to relax after a long day in the heat & humidity of Beijing.
Breakfast is also served in the courtyard and you have the choice of Chinese or Western breakfast, both of which are delicious.
The staff are very friendly - a small front of house team whom you get to know and they take the time to make sure you enjoy yourselves and are on hand with a cold beer or wine when required.
There are many restaurants nearby, all of which serve delicious food at very reasonable prices.
The hotel is situated close to a Metro station and there are also plenty of taxis available at the end of the hutong on the main road (the official taxis are cheap in China). The hutongs themselves are a fascinating way to spend an afternoon wandering down them visiting many shops & restaurants - be careful not to get run-over by the numerous reckless rickshaw drivers!!!
The hotel is not far from The Forbidden City (Tip: Take the Metro to Tiananmen Square to enter the Forbidden City and find yourself a guide before buying your tickets).
The hotel was able to arrange a private tour to the Great Wall for us, which was about 1hr 15m drive. You get a driver for 8 hours and he'll take you wherever you want. We chose to hire a guide but this was not really necessary as the wall spoke for itself. (Tip: Take the cable-car up to the wall and then walk right until you reach the next station (about 2.5 miles) Here you can get a chairlift down or do what we did and get a toboggan - great fun!!). it was a very exhausting day given the time of year and extreme heat. Take plenty of water as they overcharge at the wall itself (40 yuan instead of 2 yuan for a water!)
I hope to return to Beijng one day and I will definitely be staying here again.
Thanks to all of the hotel staff for looking after us, we really had a great time.
