What People are saying

Will definitely be back

Firball2 on 11/11/2017 13:02

Had a wonderful overnight stay in one of the cabins. Had booked a nice get away with friends who had an adjoining cabin purely by accident as we had booked separately. The cabin was cozy, very welcoming and beautifully decorated. There was only a wooden wall between the two cabins and we could hear each other. Not a problem for us but may be a bit off putting if you didn't know the family next door. Had no problems with cleanliness at all. Yes if you looked in dark corners you'd find dust but I'm not about to want to roll about the floor.
Evening meal was excellent. Our order was 2 hake, venison and pork. Could not fault it at all. Goodness knows where other reviewers could find fault. Agree with some of the comments about some of the waiting staff. Breakfast was a bit of a wait to say the least but I got the impression that a table order was taken and cooked before next order was taken as it came out reasonably quickly after order was given. Definitely all freshly cooked and of very good quality ingredients.
Bar prices were reasonable though a bottle of wine was around £24.
I will definitely return and will book a cabin again. Had a thoroughly enjoyable time.

Possibly The Worst Hotel

Kevin C on 08/11/2017 20:28

Part of a large wedding party, the hotel was around £150 for one night, the bathroom was a disgrace, growing with mould and falling apart (literally). The room itself was tired and unclean, the furniture past its best and pieces of it broken and bodged back together like the coffee tray that didn't fit the stand and fell over of It's own accord. The staff were just as bad, one staff member who was on food service clearly had a personal hygiene problem and their body odour was rife. Another member of staff looked like he had just rolled in from his previous night out, scruffy, unclean and no interpersonal skills at all. Table wine which was paid for as part of the wedding was taken behind the bar and sold to guests later that night, essentially being paid for twice. The overall feeling was one of being ripped off. A terrible experience which I'll never repeat.

good value historic hotel

my wife and I stayed here for a weekend break in October
the hotel is full of olde worde character with modern touches, the room we had was nice with an unusual out of square door frame due to the age of the building.
the restaurant and food were nice and the staff were pleasant and helpful.
the public rooms are nice with a corridor leading directly into a marquee which looked like it was decorated for a wedding.
there is a small seating area outside but not used on an evening from what I could see - this could be developed further to make the best of the outside space
the hotel is remote and quiet - just what we like
overall an enjoyable stay and we would consider staying again

Not Good

alanswatt on 06/11/2017 22:37

Receptionist very pleasant and helpful, but downhill from there. Towel rail in bathroom in pieces on the shelf. Toilet not flushing properly. Shower started off fine but pressure then dropped so much that it was hardly even a trickle and a nightmare trying to soap-off. Restaurant? Dinner choice of 4/5 mains but not a particularly good choice. We are not a particularly fussy couple, but wife could not find a good main so had two starters.
Breakfast - had to wait quite a while for a table to be "refreshed" but when we were sat down at it there were still a lot of crumbs on it from previous guests, Tea brought but no cups and saucers on the table. Toast brought but no plates on the table. To top it off we had a waiter with severe B.O.

The good - the Scottish breakfast was great.

Have been coming here since around 2000 but won't be back soon.

Overnight stay

Graeme R on 05/11/2017 21:12

We stayed for one night and the food was excellent. The place was warm and the main public areas seemed well decorated. The following morning there was a full Scottish breakfast which was very good.
The hotel is in the countryside and the grounds had plenty of parking. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The room we had was old and dated and needed some TLC. I spoke to other guests who had a modern room in the stable block and they raved about their room. The Hotel is listed as a 4 star but I would say due to the condition of our room and public toilets it should only get a 3 star.
