Our stay at Smithfield!

My girlfriend and I recently stayed at the Smithfield Inn Bed and Breakfast. This was my first bed and breakfast experience.
I think their website could use some work, however, making a reservation over the phone was a breeze! The check-in/ out procedures couldn't have been easier!
I think the only thing about the room that we would have liked better, was if the TV sat at least the height of the bed. It's not a big deal, but we are used to watching TV for a little bit before bed.
Other than that, everything was outstanding!
The food:
The Ham rolls are amazing!
I had the Smithfield Pork and Apples, and was absolutely amazed!
She had the Chicken Pot Pie, and that was yummy as well!
For breakfast, I recommend the french toast. I had the chef's omlette the first morning, and I personally would have enjoyed more veggies on it.
The town isn't large, but that's what makes it nice. The Ice Cream shop down the street also serves burgers etc. We just had the ice cream, which was pricey, but good!
The shops are all small ones, and may not be open conventional hours, but it's fun to see what you can get in to while on a mini vacation!
Colonial Williamsburg was about 45 minutes away, and that was a fun day trip!
We stayed at the actual Inn, which was directly above the kitchen. I would recommend reserving a room at the Garden House, which is not directly connected to the original Inn.
Almost as good as last visit in 2013

Again I had a suite with separate bedroom and living room areas. The bed and all sofa and chairs very comfortable. This suite had only one TV as the living and bedroom areas were not separate rooms but separate area. The two things I did not like was the lighting was very dim, especially in the living area and the water pressure in the bathroom could have been better in the shower. Otherwise the visit was delightful and the service excellent and friendly. Another plus....the excellent location of the Inn, within easy walking distance of historical sights, shopping and dining.
Pluses and Minuses at the Inn

This review is for the Smithfield Inn as a B&B (not the restaurant/tavern). There were plus and minuses here.
Plus: The room in the Garden House was clean and included a mini-fridge with some water/soda, and a few snacks. Because we were the only people staying in the house, our evening/night felt very private and quiet. Breakfast the next morning at the Tavern was good. We had some choices off a small menu, and the food was served promptly. (Although many B&Bs pride themselves on special breakfast dishes, I was happy enough with my eggs and potatoes because I've been to B&Bs where the breakfast was really lacking.) Another plus is the Inn's location, right on Main St. We enjoyed walking up and down the street. Eating dinner at the Tavern or Restaurant was very convenient also.
Minus: I had to walk into the Tavern and find someone at the bar when I wanted to check-in (I guess I had expected something more obvious). The room itself was rather small, which wasn't too big a deal, but the bathroom had no counter space, which did make things a little awkward. The bed was too soft for me. (I realize others like soft beds so would not consider that a minus.) The worst, though, was being woken by some noise at 8 AM on Sunday, followed by loud voices. When we went downstairs to the small living room (which was right below our room), we saw several employees chatting and eating breakfast. Good thing we hadn't planned to sleep in too much.
Overall, we didn't let the negatives detract from our stay. And perhaps the rooms in the Inn proper are better than the one we stayed in. But I feel no great need to return.
Interesting place

I stayed here for a wedding. It was clean. Helpful staff. I get up early and wanted fresh coffee. Breakfast is a 8:30. The staff was very nice and got me a fresh cup of coffee.
They asked me at check in if I needed ice in the room it was there before I even got my bags.
The staff was always willing to help with whatever you needed.
The room was made up well and clean.
The garden area was a great place to have breakfast. The pastry chef was out waitress she was nice and very helpful at breakfast.
My only complaints are there are only 2 small trash cans in the room. Also the bacon. I think the bacon was deep fried for breakfast. That was a little disappointing with it being Smithfield. I assume they would know how to cook up some good southern bacon. There was not great water pressure in the shower. Other than those three small issues I found my stay very enjoyable.
They claim that it was the place is haunted. I saw nothing of the sort.
There is a bar down the road also with in walking distance.
The town is small. Not much to do for "night life"
Good place to get away and get lost.
I would stay here again and I would recommend it to someone if they were in the area.
Southern charm

This is a lovely old inn. Most of the rooms are suites & very comfortable.
The amenities are generous. Staff is very helpfull & friendly. The breakfast is tasty. We were a group who rented about 6 rooms & they were able to accommodate all of us at one time, as they suggested doing the breakfast family style. That turned out to be a great suggestion. They also have a restaurant open to the general public for lunch & dinner.
I found it unusual that if you are out late in the evening the doors are locked & they have a phone number that has to be called in order to get the code to open the front door as no one is on the premises late.
