Pleasantly surprised - but your rating will also depend on the price paid.

I guess the evaluation depends on the price one paid for the room. In my case, the last-minute deal for a double room was so good, there cannot really be anything to complain about.
Reception is on the third floor, rooms also on the sixth; there is a lift available, no worries with luggage.
Yes, the room was basic, but clean - and so was the private bathroom. No outside traffic noise on the sixth floor, but it is always good to be prepared for loud neighbors and have ear plugs ready - the walls are not that thick.
Stayed for 2 nights - and they actually cleaned the room and made the bed after the first night, something I would not even expect in this accommodation category.
The location of this place is perfect, just a few minutes walking distance from the cathedral and Plaza Nueva; taxi from the bus station to Hostal Sonia is some 6e.
Good breakfast can be bought in a cafe next door (literally), a combo consisting of big ham sandwich, juice and coffee for about 5e.
Not Impressed
LondonTraveller52 on 19/10/2016 14:31
I was not impressed with this hotel. The reception staff looked scruffy and unshaven, seemingly spoke no English or Italian and made no effort to help communication. The room seemed dark and uninviting. The hotel is on a street with limited vehicle access - I don't think I should have driven through it. It was difficult to stop to unload our overnight bags. Public parking was available some distance away - the hotel has special rates for parking payable at the hotel. All in all I was disappointed.
Good starting point to visit Alhambra

Nice hostel on the 3rd floor of the building situated inside the old city, 5 min walk from Granada cathedral, 15 min walk from Alhambra. Seems to be recently renovated, with comfortable clean rooms and working and not-to noisy A/C. Many restaurants around. Unfortunately, staff does not speak much English - the guy who invited us at check-in was friendly, but asked about anything just kept repeating things in Spanish, probably thinking that if he does it long enough, we learn new language eventually... In general I would say the hostel is convenient and quite cheap for the standard it offers.
The main problem - the place is hard to reach by car, if you travel that way. We eventually broke the traffic rules to drive there, as the only "legal" route suggested by our GPS was under construction. There is no free parking around, hotel staff suggests only expensive public parkings (18Eur/day in summer 2015) few hundreds meters away. But if you are willing to walk a bit more, free parking spots can be found about 1.5km from hotel, in the residential area between Av. Juan Pablo II and Av. Andalucia, after they both cross with Av. Oloriz.
BED BUGS, AVOID THIS HOSTAL !
Pierre-Luc D on 31/08/2014 13:59
I stayed there 1 night and I've been bitten many times by bed bugs unfortunately. That ruined my trip in Granada. Moreover, the guy at the reception told me that he will refund my night and he did the opposite and charged me anyway. What a nice guy ! Don't stay there, otherwise you will have to cure for a couple of days and hide your face full of bites.
Hostel Prices, Hotel service

Booked a room for 2 nights to visit Alhambra. Arrived (after a battle with Granada's terrible one way system) to be pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of the room.
There was an en-suite bathroom and wifi(although it went down for a while, it was soon sorted out)
If you are looking for a cheap place to stay that won't make you feel like you are slumming it, this is definitely the place.
