The grounds at Stourhead are beautiful and we have walked through them a number of times before. Before our walk, this time, we decided to have lunch at The Spread Eagle. From the outside it looks good and no doubt sitting outside in the summer is really nice.
But this was November and we were inside in the back room which is gloomy - if not to say rather depressing in the way that National Trust tea rooms can be.
Our (4) lunches were pretty pedestrian,which reflected the rather boring menu. But that got us out more quickly to do the walk - so not all bad then.
The good news - helpful, friendly staff.

Having completed the walk around the gardens, this seemed like a good place to stop for lunch. However, we came away disappointed for three reasons;
first, because the menu being offered on the day bore no resemblance to the one on the website. The online version had promised venison burgers, warm beetroot and goat's cheese, traditional fish pie, etc, suggesting a more upmarket diet. On the day, it was much more bog standard, the most interesting things we could find being scampi and a ploughman's;
secondly, our food took 35 minutes to come. We noticed that people who had arrived after us were getting theirs before us and drew this to the waitress's attention;
thirdly, there is a low doorway between the restaurant and the bar, where you go to pay your bill. I passed through it safely on the way to pay the bill, but coming back, banged my head on the stone lintel. Admittedly, there is a notice warning about this, but it was not very clear. I can't be the only 6-foot person who has hurt their head in this way. It if can happen, it will happen. The receptionist was not sympathetic, suggesting that it was my fault for not reading the notice! The doorway should be made safer.

We wanted to take some some photos of Stourhead in the autumn. In order to catch the early morning.We stayed at the Spread Eagle inn.
We had a sandwich for lunch and we tend to agree with another reviewer that there was a tad too much mayonnaise .However the filling was generous and the bread was delicious.
The room was comfortable and clean and in keeping with the age of the property.The shower was over the bath without a shower curtain - it was not ideal but not a problem for one night.
We had dinner and we found the food to be excellent . I chose poached egg and asparagus and was surprised by the size of the starter. We both had the salmon and noodles and found it delicious.The hotel has 5 rooms so we found the dining room to be spacious and intimate at the same time. The food was swerved promptly and the staff friendly and helpful .The breakfast had all the usual items and we found the English breakfast delicious.
W enjoyed our stay, the staff we great. This was our second visit and we will return. We found that being "on site " made our enjoyment of Stourhead that much greater than just a day visits

We had taken our French friends to Stourhead gardens ( excellent as evr) and decided to have lunch here. Whilst the setting if fine the food ranged from ok to awful. A generous ploghman's was spoilt by dry, rather stale bread and an egg sandwich was predominantly mayo. Pierre's fish was 'ok' but overall this was a disappontment.

This is a beautiful location and the room we stayed, 2, in was clean and comfortable. The furniture is in keeping with the age of the property. Others have mentioned the lack of a proper shower. This is a fair point but not a big deal for me.
The evening menu is a little limited so we dined in Mere.
WiFi is awful. I tried to use the room phone to dial via reception but the receptionist was unable to connect me. She asked me to come down to reception so she could make the call from there. It was just a bit awkward but she was very courteous. However other members of staff could do a bit more finesse when dealing with customers.
The location and age of the building are great draws but the owners could do a much better job.
