Stopover in penrith
Angie72Mon 21/10/2017 15:46Booked this hotel as a half way point overnight stay. Staff extremely friendly and welcoming. Having read previous reviews I was concerned about the parking situation as there is no official car park with the hotel and we had a car parked full of my sons belongings. We were given advice on parking options and chose to go with the Bluebell car park literally minutes drive from the hotel. Due to our late arrival and early departure (7pm - 7am) we had no parking fees and no problems with parking. We had the 3 bed room which was sufficient for our needs but tbh in need of updating and redecorating. I would stay here again as a stopover because of its convenient location and warm welcome but wouldn't expect too much from the rooms.
Clean, lovely staff, great food.
wadeLeylandon 11/10/2017 15:26Stayed here for one night. The room was bright, clean with everything you would need. With a nice view of the castle ruins. The staff were really nice and helpful. We had an evening meal of tapas which was excellent and very good value for money. The tempura prawns were delicious with a very light and crisp batter. The garlic prawns certainly had a kick and the strips of steak were served with a lovely yoghurt and cucumber dip. We really enjoyed the food, well done to the chef, delicious! All in all a great stay and very handy for the town centre and 2 minutes walk from the railway station.
One night stop in Penrith
Lorraine Mon 29/09/2017 10:33Excellent value for money. Bright, clean, well appointed room close to the castle and only 2 minutes walk to the town centre. Amazing evening meal and delicious breakfast in the morning. Very friendly owners and staff. Wish we could have stayed longer.
Great Room, Breakfast and Staff
Anthony Don 26/09/2017 18:20This review covers two visits a month apart, one in August the other in September. There were some problems with the first visit and a key point in this review is how this was dealt with. I decided it would be best (most productive) if I outlined my concerns to the proprietor, which I did. He in turn looked in to the concerns and reported back in detail what he was doing about them. As well as offering compensation for the problems he asked us to retain our second booking and see what differences he had made.
We stayed in the same room both visits. There was nothing wrong with the room either time but I suppose you could say the decor was a bit tired the first time. Between visits the bedroom had been redecorated and re-carpeted and that lifted it tremendously. The only actual problem originally was one of the velux blinds wasn't functioning correctly, and that had been fixed. It (room 15) is a great family room, up in the roof with its own 'front door' inside the hotel, leading to stairs up to the bathroom and bedroom. Thus it's very quiet and we slept very well as a result.
The breakfast was brilliant and both the food and the service were first class. I was particularly interested in this as breakfast had been the source of our problems on the first visit. And it wasn't just us, as we could see everyone getting the same great service. I think the first experience may have just been an off day (we all have them!). In any case all of my concerns had been fully addressed - you can't ask for more than that. Finally a special mention for the sausages - really delicious!
The great thing is that it was a great hotel experience and at a bargain price. I am a huge fan of Premier Inns, but the Station Hotel thrashes the Penrith one for value for money. Also it is close to the railway station (as you would expect from the name!) yet there is little noise. It backs on to a lovely park around the ancient castle, which is lovely for a walk.
I didn't eat at the hotel in the evening but I did use the bar and the food I saw served there certainly looked very enticing. Maybe next time I will get the chance to try it! And there will be a next time, that's for sure.
In summary:
+ Great breakfast
+ Great room; fresh, clean, comfortable and quiet
+ Great value for money
+ Handy for the railway station
+ Friendly and helpful staff throughout
- Nothing of note
Key question: Would I stay here again?
Definitely
Fantastic value for money
ISFLMon 13/09/2017 14:41In the past, I’ve stayed at The George in Penrith. It used to be a classy place but has gradually faded over the years, and now seems expensive for what it is. I needed to attend a funeral with my sister, and she had booked herself into the Station, where she had (happily) stayed before. I was put off by the rates being quoted on the Trip Advisor site, given that my sister was paying £30/night – half what it shows on the site.
So I called them directly, and made a reservation – at £30. I also pre-booked breakfast at £7.50 (note: if you want breakfast, you pretty much need to do this – I don’t think you can just turn up in the morning for breakfast if you haven’t pre-booked it). I paid £20 deposit, with the balance due on arrival.
When I got there, I got a wonderfully friendly welcome from the girls/ladies behind the bar. The place itself is a little faded, but generally very clean and presentable. As for my room: it was absolutely fine. Yes, I’ve stayed in bigger, but the bed was comfy, the bathroom facilities entirely adequate (a decent shower too), there was space to work, a perfectly serviceable TV – and, as I was on the back (Room 6) I was looking out at the castle.
As others have said: parking is a bit of a pain. The hotel doesn’t have its own, but there’s public parking about 5 minutes away (Bluebell Lane) which is free from 6:00pm to 8:00am, and not too expensive out of those hours (£4.80/day).
My sister and I had a few drinks in the bar - friendly service again – before heading downtown for a curry.
I slept well enough. I’d been asked at check-in what time I’d like breakfast, and presented myself in the dining room at 8:00. The cook was a charming lady. Orange juice was already on the table, and I was asked if I wanted cereal before my full English. The breakfast, when it soon came, was fine – a couple of sausages, two rashers of bacon, a perfectly fried egg, mushrooms, tomato and baked beans (the latter should have no place on a breakfast plate, but there you go…) – all well cooked. Toast was brought soon after.
All in all, I’d thoroughly recommend the Station. At £30/night plus breakfast, it’s remarkable value for money – and I don’t think I’d have enjoyed staying at The George any more than I enjoyed staying at the Station – but at a third of the price.
