A really lovely, very English hotel. We stayed for two nights in a deluxe room. V comfy bed and sofa. We had dinner one night, lovely. Portions aren't huge so if you are super hungry then you won't be full! The afternoon was good. Not the best we have ever had tbh, a couple of the cakes were dry, but it was included in our deal. Breakfast was great. Staff were plentiful and very charming. Overall an incredibly civilised and unpretentious English hotel that we felt completely relaxed in and yet very lucky and privileged to be there. Thank you!
Wedding

We stayed here for a friends wedding, this is a beautiful venue!
Our bedroom was stunning, we had our own lounge within our room, the rooms were very bright and very clean! Could not fault the hotel one bit. As we were celebrating they go to your room and close the stutters and put lights on so it's done when your ready to go back.. the food was outstanding! Breakfast was delivered to our room was very basic would of like some baked beans that's all I have to moan about . Stunning venue and I wish the happy couple a long and healthy relationship.
Is it a hotel or a home?

I booked our stay at Ston Easton with some trepidation as previous reviews seemed to form a theme around poor food and poor service spoiling an otherwise idyllic hotel. I have to say that whilst there is an issue around staffing levels how much you let it disappoint you depends on how you perceive the building and what you expect from your stay. Is Ston Easton a stately home providing accommodation or a five star country hotel housed in a stately home? If the former, it's doing a grand job. If the latter then it's a bit of a disaster.
My wife and I booked a night in a state room looking for potential places that we could return to with two Labradors (One three year old four legged tornado and a six year old food processing unit). The web site pushes dog friendliness but at £20 a night per dog I suspect they would be happier if you left your fur babies at home. I can sympathize as I would be very nervous if bringing a dog that was likely to take its frustrations out on the back of the oak bedroom doors or chew up the four poster in your absence. The resident spaniel is quite happy granting 'audiences' to the dog lovers that do pass through so I think it's best to regard this hotel as catering for 'dogs if essential'.
Sadly our arrival was marred by having noted in previous reviews an admittance by the hotel that people booking through discount sites were often given poorer rooms. My back was thus immediately raised when it was explained that the room we had booked was not available due to a failure of the television system and that we had been transferred to one smaller but of a similar standard. Asking to see the first room produced an inordinate number of excuses until insistence won the day. In the event we did keep our allotted room but having booked direct with the hotel we felt that it might have been better to have said nothing and left us none the wiser. In the end the media problems were solved so we lost out on our original room but we can sympathize with the hotels predicament. Did they start us off with a problem in the hope it could be fixed or be honest and put us in a serviceable room. It was just an unfortunate start.
As to the rest of the stay there is no other way to put this. Ston Easton is quite simply the most stunning and beautiful building in which to be a guest. A lot has been said about the grounds and furnishings so I will not add anything other than to say it is all justified, and having been a private guest in similar houses around the country it is a credit to the owners that everything is so well maintained and well preserved. If you wish to moan about the prices in the bar and on the wine list (and their worth moaning about) then remember the amount that maintaining the house and grounds must cost.
Service was the only issue we noted. As previous reviews have said. The hotel is under resourced and it was noted most in the afternoon when we chose to take the sun outside and were left to raise our own sun shades, clean our own seats and search out the staff below stairs when wanting to order drinks. That is where the question of whether Ston Easton is a home or a hotel is best judged. If you are happy to 'get on with it' and go find that waiter or sort out something without being pampered then it is as close to living a true English country life as you're going to find. If you are going to look at an empty glass and curse the lack of service for an hour then Ston Easton will drive you mad.
Apart from reception staff we only saw two servers all day. A young Eastern European couple who were friendly and efficient but obviously overworked, especially at dinner. Whilst a brave effort was made to serve our wine throughout the meal it was obvious that we were going to run dry for long periods, thus we asked for our bottle to be left on the table and served ourselves. We sympathized with the waiter and reassured him that we were not critical and understood he was working hard. The young lady seemed very inexperienced but we did enjoy playing 'up a bit, down a bit' with her to find the Amaretto bottle on the bar shelves when ordering our after dinner liqueurs. Self made after dinner entertainment!
We found the standard of the food at dinner excellent, and actually a little more plentiful than we expected judging from previous reviews. It is perhaps unfortunate that the restaurant doesn't seem to have won any awards since the cooking was well up to the standards of those that boast stars or rosettes. Perhaps the lack of service is the key factor?
Returning to our room our sleep was excellent and breakfast simply magnificent, although our two stalwart Eastern Block cousins were still hard at it alongside a couple of new faces.
All in all Ston Easton did not come across as 'laid back' enough to justify a 'wellies and dogs' type of stay for us. The house is too formal, the decorations too grand and the furniture too precious to be risked against an anxious dog. But if you long to stay in a true English stately home, living the 'Downton Abbey' lifestyle but allied to a degree of informality that will test your resources and make you feel that you are not simply a paying guest then I recommend it to you.
Lovely and comfortable

Ston Easton is a magnificent building in beautiful grounds. While the decor in the bedrooms and bathrooms may not be brand spanking new, it is all clearly very well cared for and seriously comfortable. These people make comfort a very high priority, which is sadly not as commonplace elsewhere as it should be. The staff are very nice and the food enjoyable too
Wonderful Sunday lunch

W are lucky enough to live fairly close to Ston Easton and visit on a regular basis. The five course lunch tasted menu and dinner is always superb but the Sunday lunch is exceptional. Three courses are offered for £26.50 and the roast dinner is the best yet. The service is always attentive and the surroundings are outstanding. It's always a joy to visit and dine at Ston Easton and a Michelin can't be too far away.
