We stayed here one night while visiting Machu Picchu, and had a delightful room overlooking the river. The room was comfortable, quiet, and had a great view up and down the valley. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food in the restaurant was as good as anywhere. No complaints.

This is one of the best hotels we stayed at on our tour of Peru. Elegant, clean and very close to Machu Picchu. You can walk to the train station and to the bus station that will take you to Machu Picchu.

Arrived hot and tired, met with iced tea and cool towels while our reservation was processed. Large attaractive room, large bathroom. Room looked over the dirt road but the buses didn't wake us and we had a great nights sleep. The dinner was included in the price and was excellent with attentive service. Breakfast also very good.

Very Nice Hotel but not worth the price

Without any real prior knowledge of what to expect in Aguas Calientes, we booked the SUMAQ Hotel for our one night because of previous reviews and the fact that its rooms were less expensive than some of the higher luxury properties that friends of ours had stayed in. We felt that if we booked something less expensive, we would not be having a very comfortable stay. After spending time wandering around the town, we realized that there were other less expensive options (less than $300/night) that, while maybe not as nice as SUMAQ, would've provided us with all we needed for that one night. Keep in mind when booking a hotel that most people only spend one night in Aguas Calientes, and you will probably not spend much time in your hotel as most of your time will be spent up on Machu Picchu and wandering around the fun little town. This review is not meant to be negative against the hotel itself - the SUMAQ is actually a very nice hotel. Nice lobby, nice bar, nice dining room with a good breakfast spread, free wifi, nice rooms and nice bathrooms. Try and get a room on the front of the hotel with a balcony overlooking the mountains and river. The hotel staff was all very nice and helpful - brought us a free refreshing drink upon check-in and even took our bags up to the train station for us. But if you are only spending one night in Aguas Calientes, I would recommend looking into other options that are not as expensive as they are readily available!

Nice hotel at base of Machu Picchu

We stayed here for 3 nights while visiting Machu Picchu. It's a very nice hotel but service was hit or miss. We had requested a King room on a higher floor, but got a 2 Doubles room on the first floor. They said they were fully booked and didn't have any other rooms available. We did have a river view room so that was enjoyable but being on the first floor gave away some privacy since hikers were walking past right outside the balcony.

We had breakfast, cocktail hour, and dinner included with our reservation. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner (which included a 3 course meal), but cocktail hour was a bit confusing since they didn't specify which drinks were included. Also, the bar area tended to get very busy during cocktail hour and service was a bit spotty. We would sit down at the bar and be ignored until we flagged someone down. Other instances of spotty service: They have turndown service at this hotel, but we did not get it consistently every night even though we left the room for dinner around the same time. At check-in, they served welcome drinks and snacks, but we only received our drink and no snacks.

All in all, this is one of the nicer hotels in the area but you are definitely paying for it considering the high room rates.
