What a great adventure with legendary Willie Gordon

We traveled with two families and organized a visit to the land of the Nugal-warra people. Elder Willie Gordon was a very inspiring man who was able to capture the attention of all 8 individuals (4 adult and 4 childeren) with his knowledge and passion about the culture,
spirituality and the land where his ancestors have been living. From teaching to go 'lizard fishing', to explaining the meaning of sacred paintings and -places, Willie was like an walking encyclopedia. As one of the smaller kids said after we left: 'that man is al legend by life'!

Our Outback Aussie Tour group met with Willie Gordon and spent two hours engrossed with his walk and talk. Willie is very personable and able to put across some of his culture in the short time we had very admirably. His wit and demonstrations kept us enthralled till we had to depart. A great part of our tour, and thanks to OAT for including this.

Willie spent the day showing us the beauty of the country and rock art that was mesmerizing. Fantastic walk through the bush highlighting the attributes of traditional plants and describing their uses. Couldn't have asked for a more informative interactive tour!!!
A very informative morning

We took a morning tour. Willie picked us up at our motel on time in an aged but acceptable minibus for a half-hour drive to the site for our walk. Willie kept up a flow of chat about the area and about his own indigenous heritage. Before the walk he gave us bottles of cold water and a carrier, a stick to steady us on the way and instructions about the various snakes and what to do if we saw one. The leisurely walk took a couple of hours across rocky ridges where tribes once moved when they went "walkabout". Willie kept up a flow of information about plants and their uses, the use of ochre and the meaning of the rock paintings. He was a very grounded person with practical and sensible views on land management and indigenous culture. The tour was a great experience.
Art and philosophy

Wonderful walking tour learning about plants, animals and people, especially ourselves. Real exercise for the mind - still thinking about it the day after. If only Martin Heidegger had taken this tour! Art and life, truth and being. It's all in this tour.
