What People are saying

Nice place to stay in charming Cambria

Sfboy101 on 25/10/2017 20:11

We had to change our plans last minute from Napa (due to the fires) to Cambria, so we had limited option, we decided Rigdon House had the feel of what we were looking for. The historic aspect of the hotel is easily noticeable, from the bay windows to the heavily paneled sitting room/library. There are many great smelling restaurants within easy walking distance, I didn't get to try them all, but Robins across the street is really a gem. The rooms are larger than standard, modestly furnished, I enjoyed the two fireplaces. We stayed in the main portion of the building up a beautiful wooden staircase which is accented by a charming chandelier. Beds were comfortable and pillows were some of the best I've encountered. I've seen some reviews saying the hotel needs updating, I'm 50/50 on this, the common areas and the rooms are perfectly fine. The bathrooms however, yea maybe 1980's? Plenty of room for a double sink in a room that sleeps 6 would be a welcome addition. The staff, for the most part, are very friendly and provide great local information.
The scarecrow festival is going on in the area and that really added to the charm and quirky fun of the town. The elephant seas were really cool, as was hunting for moonstones on moonstone beach. Hearst Castle is amazing as always and really is the crown jewel of the area.
There are several things visitors should know about the property before deciding to stay here, if you stay in the main house you walk by the front desk every time you go in and out of your room. Just a personal preference, not quite my style. Secondly, even though the house allows pets, I wouldn't exactly call it pet friendly, more like pet tolerant. I'm no cheapskate, but 40$ per night for your pet to stay with you is absolutely absurd. You can book an entire room for HUMANS elsewhere in the area for a little more than 40$ a night. The Fairmont in San Jose charges 75$ for the entire length of stay, which is less than the 120$ I paid. I highly suggest rethinking this policy.
Overall, I enjoyed my stay and would return

A great overnighter

Stayed for a night en route from LA to SF. Stayed in a large family room that was perfect for our family of 5. Also walked straight out today into a parade/ festival type thing which was a nice little bonus! Friendly little town which I would recommend to any west coast traveller

Lovely romantic escape

From the moment you walk in the lobby you feel at home. The staff was graceful and welcoming. Foreign and domestic travelers unite at this lovely manor. The location is on Main Street with a variety of shops and dining options to chose from. Breakfast is included and was delightful. We will return.

Quirky Hotel with huge rooms

We stayed in the Rigdon House as part of a US roadtrip and chose it for it's proximity to Hearst Castle and the Elephant Seal sanctuary.
What a lovely surprise this place was.
The building itself is charming and on a very quiet street in a beautiful small town. Very safe to walk around and great access to restaurants, shops and amenities on the main street a minute or two away.
We had a great welcome and the whole place felt like a very well run family home.
The decor and furnishings are very classy and the downstairs reception areas feel like you have walked into a very stylish museum. Old world bookcases and woodwork look great whilst still managing to appear up to date and very very clean
The room was a great surprise. It was huge, loads of space and a great balcony overlooking the large patio and firepit area with comfortable seating all around and with a decent forestry view at the rear. (look out for what we think were loads of Turkey Buzzards flying round - they look great).
The bed was enormous and comfortable and there was a fridge and microwave in the room.
Breakfast provided was a bit of a simple affair with porridge, boiled eggs, muffins and croissants and although it was basic it was filling and to be honest that was made quite clear on our booking.
We booked this trip for our Silver Wedding and mentioned it to the hotel and were pleasantly surprised to find wine and a card from the hotel in our room on arrival
If you are looking for a very decently priced, clean tidy and very surprising stay almost halfway between San Fransisco and LA, then try this place
Would we stay again? Of course - fabulous, thanks

Big Room

we stayed here on a stopover during our recent holiday to california. This being the first time in this hotel we didn't know what to expect. the room was a suite on the ground floor and was massive. it had a 3 piece suite as well as a king bed with separate shower and bathroom. the hotel had just been re furbished and looked very clean as was the room. if i was picky then a room safe would be good and there is no air con. the 2 windows opened up to the back patio where other guests would walk by and be able to sit and be able to see in the room. there was a fly net on the outer window, but leaving the windows open was awkward. the breakfast which came with the room was sparse to say the least. this does need addressing.
on the whole the room was good, the staff were ok and if we needed a stopover in the area then we would stop here again.
