Staff were polite & friendly, room was clean, comfortable but basic, the problem was it was very noisy due to music event whilst we stayed, at no time where we warned this would affect our stay but on going to bed we could still hear live music & customers departing right below our window, we also couldn’t get a seat in the bar & the service was slow due to busy night which we understood but when drinks arrived glasses were dirty so I couldn’t drink mine, I will not be returning

We had got tickets for the Theatre so decided to stay in Richmond overnight rather than drive home late. I booked the Castle Tavern on the phone and discussed which room would be the quietest and was advised to book a back one. To my horror when we got back from the theatre, a group was playing directly underneath us and the amplification was so loud, the bed was positively bouncing. Sleep was impossible and we couldn't hear the TV even when on full volume.
The "Stump Cross" is a nice room but the sound proofing from the bar below is non existent. Even ordinary conversations could be heard but that would have been alright.
This is a shame as the staff are lovely and the breakfast excellent. I do feel that guests should be warned if a group is playing. We were told bands play on the last Saturday of the month. In which case, the person taking my booking would have known and given it was clear I was concerned about noise, he should have mentioned it and allocated a quieter room if available.

From arriving to leaving, it was a great experience. The bar is popular and always busy without being cramped. They had live music on when we stayed. The room we stopped in was quirky but lots of room and everything you needed and clean. The breakfast is great, and there is plenty of choice. Cheryl had the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. I had the full breakfast which was fantastic. The staff are really friendly and helpful

We stayed in Swale room , (first room on the left as you went upstairs) , at The Castle Tavern on Thursday 28 & Friday 29 September 2017. Staff very friendly, but really only met Jo who was lovely, friendly and very helpful.Breakfast good.Towels lovely & white. Swale room was a mess and needs an update.Shower filthy, shower mixer fell off & hard to use. Toilet black inside, needs bleaching.Windows all black with mound around frames.Ceiling peeling & marked from a very leaky water tank or roof.Light in the centre of the ceiling had bare wires exposed.Room could do with a better clean.Very poor for £70 per night.We were very disappointed ☹️
Richmond is a lovely place to visit.

To the cook definitely stay again served evening food but can't comment as didn't eat there but seemed popular teatime as was packed with people eating
