Brendon Ion 18/09/2017 12:47Rooms OK, breakfast Great, Bathroom ??. Meals at bar but limited. A/C OK. could walk most places, on/off bus stop at door. Small shops close by for most things. Safe inside at night. Short stay good. Overall place was central to were you can walk to things or org tours.
A hotel to avoid at all cost
Capefuntourson 18/08/2017 06:49We stayed because of proximity to the Johannesburg Theatre. 3 separate room bookings, each confirmed, each not on the system on arriving. We knew the rooms were old and tired but the linen and towels as well? Only 1 bedside light. Nice new bar boasting 3 draught beers - only one available and no wine. The Devonshire must go into the Guiness Book of records as the only hotel in South Africa that cannot sell you a glass of wine from either of its 2 bars, no stock (cash flow problem suppliers not paid?). If you need an early morning call don't bother at 05:00 the thump thump of heavy gym music will wake you interceded by the thud of heavy weights. So, soak in a warm bath, forget it, tepid water. Breakfast is fun, constant shouting from open kitchen door by staff negates the need for any background music. Oh and don't forget to bring your own teaspoon they don't appear to have any. The Devonshire is run by Orion Hotels. We will not risk staying in any of their properties again.
Comfy stay despite maintenance issues
NelspruitCaon 23/07/2017 17:29We needed a place at short notice and got a good deal through Agoda. We wanted to be close to city centre. We arrived on a Saturday and although the rooms were a little late to prepare the staff were very friendly. We waited quite a long time for towels but the housekeeper was apologetic and friendly. Yes, the hotel is an old lady; lots of maintenance issues but not to the extent of an uncomfortable stay. The beds are great, linen is clean, bathroom has decent water pressure. Little things like no hairdryer, wonky bedside lamps and worn out room information pages didn't bother us too much; everything was clean and neat. We enjoyed the casual vibe and music from the bar.The staff obviously have to make do with limited resources and I think they are doing a good job. The bar lady was lovely and put up with our rowdy late night visit really professionally. We felt we paid for 3 star accommodation and it was good value for money. We would like to visit again once the renovations are done.
Soweto has more dignity in guesting people.
schettinipaolaon 23/03/2017 21:05I am still here...just two nights fortunally! I arrived at 2.30 pm (17 march 2017) and I got my room at 6.30 pm because i changed n.4 rooms before getting my final room n.202.
No hit,no fun,no wifi,obsolete furniture and no facilities at all.You are renewing the entry but no taking care abt the rooms. Even if the staff is good ( and it is), how can they satisfy customers' needs if they have no sources and no access to give a good services and to make people feel at home? SOWETO has more dignity than this hotel, trust me!

Overnight stay over
Annemarie345on 27/02/2017 15:50We went to a rooftop wedding near Maboneng and wisely decided to stay over in Johannesburg and ubered back and forth. My friend booked at the Devonshire in Braamfontein - it was a mistake. :-( it provided safe parking , lovely friendly great staff , a good hearty breakfast , clean bedding , but that was all. I wonder why hotel owners don't realize how important maintenance is. Come on ..... cracked tiles .... no lift buttons ( so you have to use stairs to call a lift) ... water stains on the ceiling , just a feeling of grime and old and decay. And the hotel was fully booked???For how long though ? Please .... look after your asset and people will return . My advice .... use TripAdvisor and look a bit further before you book. Final remark: you have wonderful staff ... I hope you realize that and look after them. They made it worthwhile in the end. Sadly , I will not be back.
