What People are saying

Great place

StellaLover on 02/05/2017 21:05

Stayed here for three nights for Tough mudder. Originally booked a 3 bed apt but there was an electrical fault so Claudia changed to 3 x 1 bed apts all next door to each other. We used the middle as a communal room which was perfect. Camp beds provided were excellent for our children and all apts had washing machine with a couple of tablets included. Toiletries in bathrooms and tea and coffee. Highly recommended with a short walk from the Oracle. We did the Reading murder mystery trail which we all enjoyed too stopping at the odd pub on route! Claudia is fantastic excellent communication.

Perfect

Stayed here whilst my husband was seriously ill in Royal Berks, which is just six minutes walk from door to door. Claudia the manager is exceptional and nothing was too much trouble. I had apartment 1, which was well furnished, clean and spacious. It was on the main road, but this not a problem, certainly the trafic did not keep me awake. The complex is very secure, important in my circumstances, with a Tescos express and other shops just minutes away. On arrival there was a good selection of tea, coffee etc, bathroom toiletries, washing machine tablets, bin bags and washing up liquid, very thoughtful and welcoming. Buses pass the door frequently to the town centre and the railway station, although it is an easy walk, of about twenty minutes. Do make sure you have plenty of change as many buses only accept the exact fare, which can be problematical. I would not hesitate in recommending this accomodation and certainly Claudia is the gem find!

Good location

Convenient place to stay and easy walking distance to town centre. Well set up apartment and absolutely spotlessly clean. Having a car park was a bonus. We found it a little noisy due to the traffic on the busy road but in cooler weather you wouldn't have to have windows open so it might not be a factor in a different season. Enjoyed having a pub next door and a shop nearby to buy groceries.

So many issues!

I stayed at The Faculty on 2 separate occasions in December/January. I suppose it's taken me this long to get around to writing this review because I'm still getting over my stay. I'm astonished at the generally positive reviews of this accommodation. Did we stay in the same place?

Where to begin? The shower - this is the tiniest shower stall I have ever used. I'm a normal sized human - as were my travelling companions and yet we struggled to lift our arms over our heads to wash our hair. What's perplexing is that the tiny shower is located in a big bathroom - it's not like they didn't have room. They've just chosen the cheapest I assume. In the second apartment the shower head had broken completely so there was no chance of standing under it, you had to hold it and somehow manoeuvre it around the tiny, tiny stall. It took several days to get this fixed.

Continuing in the bathroom the shelf was crooked, again just shoddy workmanship. The bathroom fan turned on randomly and then could not be turned off. At one particularly lovely point we had no hot water, in England, in January. When we phoned the management we were told to check a switch in the cupboard and informed the cleaners must have switched it off. We then waited several hours for the hot water to kick back in.

A number of heaters in the bedrooms and living area had broken switches so it was impossible to determine what setting they were on. Many of the windows produced a hideous whistling sound in the slightest breeze. The furniture in the living area consisted of an old leather couch which gave new meaning to the word "uncomfortable" - we gave up and sat instead on the dining room table chairs - not exactly cosy.

All light fittings were bizarre in that when you turn on a light you don't get immediate illumination - you have to wait while they warm up.

I was staying with 2 other people and the crockery/cutlery reflected that. 3 glasses, 3 mugs, 3 sets of knives and forks etc etc. The microwave plate did not spin leaving us to wonder if we were perhaps giving ourselves radiation poisoning trying to heat milk for coffee. On the subject of milk - there is long-life UHT available. Each one we opened was so old that it was something beyond curdled - a thick, gluggy abomination that we tipped down the sink. There is also no dishwasher.

The free wifi is painfully slow if it works at all, certainly all three of us were hard pressed to use a phone or laptop at the same time. We gave up trying to upload holiday photos.

When I say that the apartment had floorboards that creaked I don't mean one or two - I mean EVERY step taken caused a cacophony of noise making it impossible to move if someone else was sleeping without waking them. A problem when one of us is a very early riser.

The washer/dryer - ubiquitous in all English accommodation was simply impossible to use, we ended up with sopping wet clothing that we had to try to dry over the towel rails - which seemed to turn on and off at will.

During our first stay we were in a 2 bedroom apartment on the top floor - there is no elevator and no 2 bedroom option on a lower floor. We were in the UK for 5 weeks so had some serious bags to drag up there. On our second stay we requested a ground floor apartment and paid extra for a third bedroom we didn't need. We ended up keeping the luggage in there as there is zero room for a suitcase in the single bed room. Why would we go back you might ask? We had pre-paid and foolishly thought perhaps we just got unlucky the first time round. No, we experienced all the same problems save for the stairs.

We stayed in multiple locations across England and Scotland on this trip - some lovely well-equipped, nicely furnished, welcoming places - The Faculty was not one of them.

Pleasant accomodations

akamai_gurl on 17/02/2016 18:30

Pleasant accomodations in a central location of Reading. Walkable to many places. Had 2 kids in apartment and worked well and not too far from train station. Clean and appropriately appointed. Staff very kind and helpful.

Only downside, there was no lift, and only 1 key. Would ask for a second key if available.
