We visited the Restaurant only - so can't comment on accommodation.
A delicious meal on a Sunday evening. Lots of lovely choices on the menu - we settled for the Sunday Roast Beef and the Venison Casserole from the Specials Board. Neither disappointed! Beautifully cooked, well seasoned, temptingly displayed. Very friendly and attentive service without being intrusive. A relaxed, friendly and ambient atmosphere - we will most certainly return. Highly recommended - but always worth booking, especially at weekends, as the restaurant is understandably popular!

Stayed this past weekend and Upon arrival the Rats I saw in my headlights by the bins adjacent the accommodation block should have started alarm bells ringing to begin with but hey ho we are in the countryside.
We stayed in Room 1 (Nelson Room) which was freezing when we arrived and it was substandard with paint cracked, bubbled and peeling off the walls and ceiling in places... Oh and you won’t get any sleep as we had what sounded like a disco from the kitchen radio thumping through the wall which started at about 7.30am and ended about 23.00! And on the other side you could hear everything the other tenants where doing in the bathroom very clearly throughout the night.
We STILL thought we’d try and enjoy it, so booked in for dinner... I had soup to start and halfway through mine I found a 2x2cm jagged shard of hard plastic in my soup!!! The Chef told me these things do happen from time to time when the plastic tubs are microwaved they become old, brittle and break off into the food....(so much for freshly prepared). Well the main course wasn’t good as I was terrified at what I might find in that! This did ruin our evening.
Then to cap it all off upon checking out we got charged an extra £20 (which we wasn’t told about when we booked) for staying on a Saturday. I couldn't leave fast enough...So AVOID like the plague...excuse the pun.

We visited The Gate Hangs High this weekend and were extremely impressed with the food and service. The food was excellent and the staff were really accommodating - giving us ideas of activities to do the next day which was helpful. Lovely atmosphere! Will definitely come again!

We were urprised when we came across The Gate somewhat in the middle of nothing but you never know . . . Although it took a while to be served, we enjoyed our lunches. Servings were nice sized and attractively presented as well as tasty. The resident dog took his place at my feet -- a cozy touch.

We stayed a couple of nights here and were impressed with the friendly helpful staff, lovely food which is home cooked and delicious and the room was clean and comfortable. Great base for exploring the area.
