Might have a reputation, as being very good, but that is not the reality. First day our stay we caught a couple of the staff giving " the customer service smile" only to be replaced with a scowl or condescending look, when it was safe to do so ! Really poor customer service, to be caught like that ! Room was dark, glum and unwelcoming.Something out of the sixties. Half the hotel seems to be undergoing refurbishment, pity our room was not one of those that had been done. Poor bathroom. In a time warp, even if it is a Heritage Hotel. Nice pool, friendly and efficient pool staff, as was the house keeper. Good breakfast, but again staff were a bit of a hit or miss. Overall disappointing.

The property is moldering and repairs can be seen as an ongoing process even while guests are in occupation of the property .It was really annoying to have to eat lunch with the workmen going hammer and tongs on the floor above. The din was unbelievable far a 5 star property . Restaurant food is awful and stale meat was served. When the dish was remade frozen meat was used when the dish demanded fresh mutton.

For me Taj Gateway is the best Varanasi has to offer.The food at all their restaurant are so palatable.The staff is extremely hospitable.My father in law gets his regular noonion garlic meals served perfectly.
I must mention Vinod ji who makes the best cocktails and mocktails.He knows your taste and tries his best to make you feel at ease.

Stayed here early October 2017 and the thing I still carry is the awesome hospitality of the F&B team during our visit, both the restaurants the very same. They made the experience great and ensured that each meal served was great and authentic Benarasi as we had all meals that were local as there is much to experiment with Benarasi cuisine. Suggest each person try their local cusinine as most of it was finger licking. The team packed some of their awesome achar for me to carry home.
Front desk team was decent and either ways there is not much to say about them. Not very accommodating but understand keeping in mind they were over booked but felt I was discriminated against though it is just a feeling. The security of the hotel was ever smiling and welcoming.
Jiva is not similar to the standards across other Taj properties, the ambience and look and feel is superb but lacks in service, not all therapist are good, a couple of them are just mediocre and need to be better trained. Even the steam rooms aren’t clean after each service, had to point the same from my end. Team is slightly slack and not on top of things from their end.
Housing, noticed the team trying to apply lotion while he was cleaning the room, the team needs to be trained well and explained the do’s and don’ts of their service.
Overall the experience was good especially the food and hospitality of the team, really appreciate but feel across the hotel the same should be imbibed.

Nice setting, good breakfast & dinner options, neat & clean room and helping staff. There is a beautiful lobby space where you can relax and see some of the good products of artisans of Varanasi - reportedly the oldest living city of the world.
