A hotel that you will either love or hate!

This hotel is a "Colonial Building" the style of which you will either love or hate! It has a very dark interior and the bar area desperately needs new furniture!
We had booked an Executive room which was some way from the main hotel building and down a very long steep flight of steps so if you have any disability you should be aware of this. The room itself was spacious but again in need of updating. the bathroom had a shower, sink and loo - in my opinion in need of a very good clean!
The restaurant, again down a flight of steps but here there was a slope for wheelchair access, served lovely food and the service was good but the ambience sadly lacking. You could eat outside which was fun as peacocks roam around hoping for the odd tasty morsel.
This was a hotel that settled the bill in Sterling without asking whether we would prefer Sterling or Rupees and of course the rate was very much in their favour so guests should be aware of this.
mesmerizing

This is one of the best hotel in Madurai. Situated top of a hill with winding road the property has a wonderful view of Madurai city from the top. Belonged to a British gentlemen and then changed hands to Madura coats. Taj then bought over this property. The rooms are majestic reminding of the colonial period. Rooms are very spacious with all amenities provided by the hotel. The service right from arrival to check in and to the hotel room is very hospitable and courteous. The spread of breakfast is very good. One can encounter large number of peacocks which roam freely in the coffee shop
Family history made our stay even more special

We chose to stay in this hotel as it was once the home of my great Uncle and Aunt (Sir James & Lady Doak) and of course we had to stay in the Sir James Doak suite. The hotel is in a fabulous location, looking down over the city with the hills in the background. It's a lovely hotel in an old colonial style, we definitely felt the connection with the past. The staff were all very friendly and attentive and the food we ate there was all delicious. The one negative was that there was a temporary alcohol ban in Tamil Nadu at the time and so we couldn't enjoy a gin and tonic sundowner on our terrace!! Besides that a fabulous stay

After a long while, an opportunity to be with the castle peacocks amidst busy business schedule. The food is as usual good and the ambience, superb. cleanliness has taken a beat particulary in the restaurant rest room area. Also the Active Studio - GYM has junior levels equipment of heritage and needs an urgent upgrate

Situated on top of a small cliff the hotel has it's own charm with sprawling lawns, swimming pool and a flock of beautiful peacocks. It is a tranquil place. You can feed the peacocks too. From the top the city lights looks gorgeous in the night. The breakfast was wonderful. The sandwiches were pricy. Then quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.
