A comfortable but old fashioned pub/hotel

The room was large with a good sized bed and overlooking the main street. The room was very warm and if you opened the windows (secondary sliding glazing) it was quite noisy until late in the night and the noise started again very early in the morning. There was a modern ensuite bathroom/shower but there was a lot of dust and debris behind the door the rest of the room was clean
A great base to explore Stourhead

The George proved a perfect base for a couple of days exploring Stourhead, and Lytes Carey, two National Trust gems. Located in the centre of a beautiful historic village, the George is a great place to stay. The staff were most friendly and helpful, the food a 'cut above' the average inn food, but very reasonable, and the breakfast large and very very well cooked. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
No Matter How Hard he Flailed his Arms and Legs...

This is a very lovely and very old inn with very nice old furniture. The village is charming as well. Also, I have a collection of cemetery photos and I got some wonderful sunset shots in Mere. We were going from Stonehenge to Exeter, so this was the perfect stop. Breakfast was great with home baked croissants. The room was large with a great tub and a great shower.
One word of caution - the lights are all motion-sensitive. My husband decided to luxuriate in a bath so I went downstairs. However, when he relaxed, there was no motion for the sensors to sense. So - no matter how hard he flailed his arms and legs, he had to bathe in darkness until I returned.
Charming hotel in a pretty little town

I hadn't been to Mere before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I liked it very much as well as the accommodation. This was above a pub but I had a quiet room room so I wasn't disturbed by noise. The bathroom was nice with a stand alone bathtub so I had a relaxing soak. I also had dinner here which was excellent value with generous portions. The breakfast was tasty with good quality produce. The staff are friendly and helpful. Mere is a good place to stay for visiting attractions such as Longleat Safari Park, but I would stay here again and spend time in Mere itself.

Excellent room and facilities, terrific staff, couldn't be more helpful, breakfast excellent and generous, fresh coffee so triple brownie points for that, an altogether very pleasant and positive experience would happily recommend The George and will absolutely be back. Well done The George 😁
