I've just check out after 3 hours sleep in the worst bed I've ever slept in, I probably have the marks from coil springs in my back! After alerting reception to this at check and out she said it kills me I can't take some money off but you have already paid but will tell the owners (I had previously been told on the phone that my reservation merely secured the room and I would pay upon check out') seems convenient! So I said well I'll just have a receipt and I got 'its printing I can't make it print any faster' so rubbish nights sleep and snappy rudeness to finish. Not worth the money you pay for this place, a comfortable bed is the foundation of any hotel stay and you'd find a better one in a travel lodge.

Little 'change of leaves' trip to the south downs with a wonderful night at this hotel - found it due to recommendations on trip adviser for dining and ended up staying. Room was good for a pub stay (bed was pretty hard though) but otherwise great but the real winner was the food - both dinner and breakfast were exceptional and the service immaculate. Will be back!

I almost awarded one of my 5* commendations, to this great establishment. It is designated a pub, but it is much more. The bar is well frequented by the locals, as is the bar food, and the adjoining restaurant. See a separate review of the Lamb restaurant in the appropriate section; briefly the food is wonderful as is the service, not cheap, but good value.
The welcome was warm, the room was ready, even though we were early. We stayed in the Penrose room, on the ground floor, this even had its own front door! The bed was on the firm side of comfortable, but quite acceptable. The bathroom has a bath, two basins and a wet room.
So why did I view our stay at only 4*? Before arriving I contacted the Lamb by telephone and email to request 5 non-allergenic pillows, however only for arrived. I also asked for four large towels and four small towels each day of of our stay, only TWO were in the bathroom. They were also too small for adults. The shower gel and shampoo were in the wet room, in a wall dispenser, shame that house keeping did not keep them filled. They did not replace the towels for day two. Why risk an adverse comment to save a few pennies?
Sorry not to give the 100% feedback, as the staff are great, and with better management from the owners, they will deserve greater praise.

The food was delicious and very filling, the staff are really friendly and helpful and the room was clean and well decorated. The only reason I'm giving this a 4 star not 5 is because unfortunately the mattress in our room was very hard and uncomfortable which made it difficult to sleep. A mattress topper would make a huge difference.

Everything was ok, but you feel that it could be much better. The rooms are a little tired and we found broken jewellery on the bathroom floor, which makes you wonder about the cleaning.
The bar looks nice but doesn’t really work. We had a drink before dinner and although about half full, there was no where to sit. Dinner was okay but again not exceptional and not a great choice on the menu.
On checking out, I was told it was all paid for on my card. I got a call later on the day saying that they hadn’t charged me for dinner. Sorted but really.
