What People are saying

A DESTINATION, not a hotel

Stay here for several times and always find something new.

If you are looking for a modern 5-star hotel, ignore the property. But if you are looking for a place to start some exploration, Linden Center is the best in Dali. The story of Linden is legendary, the history of the property is fascinating, and the trip organized by the staffs is unique. They even invited a number of guest artists from all over the world to celebrate the time with their visitors. My best experience there was a garden ball hosted by both an American band and some local musicians.

I have stayed in some best hotels in Europe, Africa, Asia and America. The Linden Center is really a unique one that I would like to stay here once again.

Big disappointment

I looked forward to stay here having read positive evaluations. However, I almost regretted from the first night. It is a nice restored complex, yes, but that doesn't make it a good hotel. Breakfast was lousy, diner too - their famous chocolate cake - the worst I've ever had, tasted like cement . As for service : you have to ask everything, nowhere I saw some initiative . The rooms are rather big but unpractical (new bathroom has an enormous shower that takes half of the room, so there'is hardly space for the rest.) You have no fridge , no safe, no TV and even no telephone. Instead there is a whistle for emergencies in one of the drawers (if you don't look, you'll miss it) . Imagine yourself whistling until reception hears it if you have a sudden health problem ??
If you choose this hotel to visit Dali, you'd better think twice : situated in a small village with nothing to see ,it is 30 km from Dali. My taxi driver didn't even know the place. The ricefields around ? nice, but you've got them all over in Yunnan.

Beautiful and unique place that leaves long and lingering sweet memories

Stayed here for over a week with a small group for business purposes. The first impression when we arrived was "wow".. Then there were more "wow"s every day as we discover more details of the beautiful architecture, the inviting environment for us to mingle with other guests, the knowledge and friendliness of the staff (and the owners).

The rooms are super nice and I slept like a baby every day while struggling with jet lag (which didn't last long, thanks to the nice bed and pillows). All the furniture and landscaping are unique and special. My favorite spot has got to be the "Terrace" (as the French call it), overlooking the paddy fields, old town alleys/shops, with the spectacular Cangshan mountains as the background. Every day, after our long day of work, we'd sit down on it, put up our feet and enjoy a sip of beer. I had never been this happy unwinding.

The staff team is very proficient in English and offers great help. The tours they offered gave us a very nice insight into the local culture and history. Totally worth it! And their food is amazing!

Wait, did I mention that we ran into Khalil Fong (a famous Hong Kong singer-songwriter and producer)? The open and indulging environment at Linden Centre allowed us to have a little conversation and shared a good laugh! So cool! If in a regular hotel with just doors in the hallway? Forget it.

From Linden Centre, it's a short drive to visit Dali Old Town, the Erhai Lake, the Cangshan Mountain (we had a long and great walk along the CloudPath), and a lot more!

So travelers and explorers, if you would like to have an immersive experience in Dali, if you want to meet people and make friends (good, like-minded, and possible for a long time) on the way, come stay in Linden Centre. It's truly a spectacular pear that you don't want to miss!

My work will bring me back there next summer. I have to say: I can't wait!!!

Biodiversity and Cultural Hotspot

The Linden Centre has revolutionized what it means to be a hotel. There is no other way to describe what they have accomplished. You must experience it to understand.

Note: this is not hyperbole.

To be clear, Linden Centre is more social enterprise than it is hotel. The short story is, through an innovative partnership with the government, the Linden Centre restores historic buildings to their glory, bringing once decaying structures back to life. In addition they hire local professionals at all stages and sectors of the operation. They provide training, education and livable wages. They also work hard to source local antiques, furnishings and food. Their sites are impeccable. Not a detail has been missed. But that's only half the story. The real beauty of the Linden Centre is in its human resources.

Brian and Jeanee Linden are kind souls, deep thinkers, and completely service-oriented. They have amassed a first rate staff of young, dynamic, highly knowledgeable professionals that provide first rate service. Language translation? Check. Guided hikes and walking tours? Check. Local history? Check. Cooking and calligraphy classes? Check. Amazing local food with local ingredients. CHECK.

Take all this magic, place it in a restored merchant's mansion in far-western Yunnan Province, and you get an environment that feels much more like a community than a hotel.

The Linden Centre is. the. reason. to. travel.

THE REAL SHANGRI LA

This is a truly wonderful place to stay. Not only is it quiet, comfortable and has great food but a conversation with Brian Linden will teach you much about China and the remarkable work he is doing. Xizhou remains a largely unspoiled town with a great market and the fact that it is a short walk from the hotel is another plus. The tour of the hotel is also highly recommended. We didn't want to leave.
