There are a lot of things wrong with this place, it's is in dire need of a face lift especially the toilets, the noise from the birds in the morning is terrible and you will frequently be unable to find anyone. On the other hand however the location is great, it's right next to the dunes and moon lake area, the beds are comfy and warm. Wifi is stable. There are a nice collection of restaurants and bars if you walk further up the road with the dune entrance on it. Charley will sort out excellent camel tours at a moments notice. His café in town does good food (Good vegetable options) and lets you store your bags. Most importantly Charley is a really nice guy and you'll soon realise that the reason he keeps going missing is that he is usually driving people back and forward free of charge and sorting out tours. Ask him first but both him and the other workers were perfectly happy for me to grab a beer (ice cold) or water from the fridge in the courtyard if I couldn't find anyone around and pay them when they got back.

Was a little confusing to get to from the airport. Eventually found my way to be greeted by a English speaker. Pretty nice guy he will help you out and organize tours if need be. I did a camel tour into the dessert and really enjoyed it. The food is alright nothing special, but it's pretty good and easy. The room was very plain really just felt like a bed. The shared bathroom is not clean. That's the biggest issue here. Location can get annoying from time to time going to and from town. The crescent moon lake is close but you only need a few hours there then you will be over it. After the rest of your time will be spent taking the mini bus to and from town or a cab.

Lovely little place. Staff warm and welcoming. Provided umbrellas for us when it rained. Rooms a little warn but still generally clean. Very accessible to and from town. Bus from town: number 3 (behind market) takes 10 minutes and you get off at last stop. Walk down the path to you right. Turn left and walk dmfor 5 minutes until you see it on you right.

The place must have been nice but a long time ago. It's not well maintained. The rooms are dirty. Bathroom are horrible. It looks quite abandoned. However the location is good for a excursion or a trip to the dunes. The receptionist speaks a little English which is helpful. There is no possibility to eat or drink in the guesthouse. You have to walk and take a taxi or a bus to go to town.

Charleys has a great location, it is very close to the sand dune park and not too far from town (1rmb until 8pm, 2rmb after)
We didn't know what to expect having read other reviews but we liked the idea of being away from the town so we stayed here. We are glad we came but it is an experience. The courtyard has families of birds living here and they can be very noisy. There is bird poo everywhere, the floor, tables, chairs and often on guests! There are also loads of flies. The bathroom is okay, again lots of flies and bins that are not emptied often enough. The bed linen was fine but the floor and under the bed was filthy, we asked for it to be cleaned as there was loads of ants in our room, needless to mention we wore shoes all the time. There are no fans or air conditioning in the rooms, it gets very hot even with the window and door open. The shower is fine, not too clean but there is plenty of water both hot and cold.
There is a washing machine here which we thought was great, only 10rmb for a big load and there is a clothes line available for drying. The beers are good and cold for 5rmb. Breakfast here is tasty as well. Charley is helpful and approached us with information to get tickets for the Mogao caves. Good place to meet other people travelling.
Directions to get here. Get the number 3 bus to the end of the line. Facing the dunes take the first right and walk to the very end of the road. Then take a left at the t-junction, keep walking straight (about 500m) and you'll walk straight in to the driveway and Charleys is on the right.
