Smart & convenient location but a few issues

A bit of a mixed experience here. The hotel is priced competitively for a property so close to Union Square and is smart enough visually. A first glance at the reception and the rooms has it looking high-end. Unfortunately the experience was not so good.
The rooms receive a lot of light from the street and the venetian blinds on the windows are inadequate to keep it out of the rooms. All decent hotels should really allow the guests to achieve blackout conditions for quality of sleep at any time. The bathroom sink was also miniscule...not really practicable for anything more than wetting your toothbrush. The water pressure in the shower was also poor (on the 8th floor). "Complimentary" coffee and muffins were provided for breakfast but the latter were pretty poor/cheap and could have been a lot better and more "american" for very little extra cost. Also we were denied the breakfast at 9:35am in spite of the checkin clerk clearly telling us it ran until 10am - not impressed. Lastly the area - yes it's convenient for Union Square but being in SoMa you will see a lot of homeless people and drug addicts just one block to the south or east and may find it hard to avoid them.
Excellent spot close to transport, shops, restaurants and Union Square

We stayed at The Mosser for our San Francisco stop on our USA trip. The rooms were very small but well presented and had everything needed. Make sure you book a self contained room with bathroom/shower as there is an option to have a room only with a shared bathroom.
This was a great base from which we could adventure around San Fran. The Trams, Buses etc all come and go either right next door on Market Street or one a couple of mins walk away in Union Square. And it was about half the price of staying in Fisherman's Wharf or right in Union Square.
You can walk from here via Union Square up through Chinatown and North Beach to Fisherman's Wharf, about a 40 min walk with excellent chance to see the city.
We ate at the downstairs restaurant one night, service was excellent and the food was delicious.
Small rooms but great location

I stayed for one night in a room with a shared bathroom. It was clean and really close from the center where everything you need is. I would recommend for a night or two. Everything is furnished from towels to makeup remover.
Sweet & Charming

I stayed here recently on a five day trip to San Francisco. I chose the hotel for its affordability in a very expensive city. I was so happy to find that it's also in such a great location! Close to shopping and the great SF Muni transport system.I arrived very late but was greeted warmly by the doorman and the lovely lady behind the desk. The lobby is an Art Deco wonder. Check-in was easy and fast. My room was on the 8th floor and a corner room with two windows. Great cross-ventilation. Yes, there is street noise with the windows open but they provide ear plugs a very thoughtful touch. The rooms are incredibly clean and charmingly retro. Very small but cozy. I had a bathroom in suite but rooms with shared bath are also available at an even more reasonable price. No AC but quiet, efficient ceiling fans. The wood slat blinds let in a lot of light so sleeping in was challenging but with so much to do and see, who wants to stay in bed?The Mosser is clearly a favorite with travelers from overseas and everyone I met there was happy with the accommodations. If you want AC, blackout drapes, a mini fridge, and room service, this is not the hotel for you. But if you want affordability, safety, charm, fastidious cleanliness, an excellent staff, and a unique and memorable experience, this is the place for you. This WILL BE my hotel for every San Francisco trip!
Great location

The location of this hotel is what made us book in the first place and it was ideal for getting round the city and everything we had planned. However, our experience at The Mosser was impacted before we even arrived. Days before arriving we received an email saying we would need to pay extra for a private bathroom twin room- something we thought we had already paid for. When I tried to explain this to the staff, I was told this wasn't the case and after multiple emails back and forth- in which different staff told me different stories- we arrived and it still wasn't sorted. I had the rudest woman on reception basically tell me we were lucky to even get the Queen room with a private bathroom- which we still had to pay extra to be "upgraded" to. The next day when I spoke to a man on reception, he was able to move us to a private Twin room but still no explanation was given as to why the room we had originally booked (and paid for) was still requiring an extra payment.
The rooms themselves are on the smaller side, but nice and secure and in a very good condition. The location is definitely the strongest selling point of this hotel with plenty of shops, transport and food within a short walking distance.
