Hotter than July - this place is Hellish

Jiffy_F on 24/06/2017 21:38

I had the misfortune of staying at The George Hotel, Reading on Thursday, 22nd June. Although, they upgraded my single to a twin room, after less than five minutes in my room, I had broken out in beads of perspiration, and the window wouldn't open more than a few centimetres due to 'safety'(?) locks. After dinner, my request to change rooms was met with a "sorry, we're fully booked" response from the gentleman on reception. English was not his first language, and he kept referring to me as Sir, despite all the curves in my outline. After this, I went on-line and found at least three websites saying that there were at least seven rooms available for booking. A while later, the young man he did let me have a very small electric fan for the room.

At 2.30am it was unbearably hot, so I dressed and went down to reception for some iced water. The night porter wanted to add the water to my bill, and then told me that all the ice had been locked away. I settled down in a seat in the bar, where it was cooler, but a few minutes later, he switched all the bright lights on and proceeded to vacuum the carpet at 2.45am!

I took his hint that I obviously wasn't welcome there, and found an armchair on the first floor landing to settle down in, as it was still cooler than my bedroom. A most unpleasant night, and I was in no mood to revise or prepare for the exam I was due to sit the following day, after a mediocre breakfast, unpleasant coffee and jaded bathroom. A full refund would have been insufficient compensation for staying there that night. I would go out of my way to avoid staying there again.

Terrible stay

Last week I was staying this hotel
Room is not clean
Shower is not working
Terrible service
I slept my cloth I don't know sheet is clean or not
I went to reception night but I didn't see any one there I knock the shelter but no one answer it
They charge £70
I will never stay again in my life
I will report this hotel soon

Not terrible as such, but not what is advertised

millenniumperegrine on 01/04/2014 13:42

Meh. Not a terrible place, but certainly the advertising on booking websites is not justified, nor is the price. This is not a hotel, it is a fairly low-grade B&B. Fine to a degree, except if you are paying hotel prices (this was no cheaper than other places to stay in Reading) you should receive hotel-standard service.

The multi-purpose receptionist/cook/greeter was perfectly personable. The room was not particularly nice: very small twin beds, functional and thin bed-linen, peeling paint on the walls, ill-fitting windows. To use the bathroom someone had to push the door shut from outside, as the handle on the inside detached if you pulled it. Wanted to leave, but it was already 10pm and couldn't face it. Breakfast was ok, not offered on Sundays. Housekeeping empties your bin, but nothing else. No real facilities around- a few takeaways, a supermarket, no restaurants or pubs. Reasonably placed for Reading centre- about a mile walk down a straight road, regular buses- and about a 30-min walk to the University campus. You don't really save any money for it not being in a central location. On the good side, it was quiet both inside and out, had good wi-fi, and a decent sized car-park which was gated, but never locked, at least while we were there.

This would probably be reasonable if offered at about £25, half the average rate now, and if it made it clear it was a B&B. Otherwise however, I would suggest finding somewhere else; it isn't terrible, as such, but for the same price you can stay more centrally to either the town centre or university, and get access to much better hotel facilities.

Well Placed

On arriving there is a large car park next door to the hotel, the front door was locked and we had to ring the bell to call someone. A "receptionist" arrived quickly and we were soon booked in, the "receptionist" carried my wife's case up the stairs to our room ( a plus point) which was clean and warm as it was a cold night. The room had most of the facilities expected as it consisted of a small shower in what looked like a converted cupboard but worked OK and a wash basin. The toilet was shared outside the room with 3 other rooms but did not present a problem. Tea and coffee was provided and nicely laid out. Our only problem was that there is no cafe open after 6pm other than a long walk back into town as the cafe next door was closed.
A cooked breakfast was included but no cereal or bacon.
"receptionist" meant this was the only person we saw who was cook as well. Although close to a main road this did not loose us any sleep as the traffic stops after about 10 pm.

DO NOT STAY HERE

Collette H on 17/11/2012 17:18

Bathroom window broken would not close meaning the room was freezing cold.
No towels provided had to ask and received one hand towel between two people.
If you want a shower you have to duck due to the way it's built. I'm a 5ft5 and I had to watch my head. The shower was as powerful as a water pistol.
Beds gave us chronic back pain. Kettle when used smelt like it was burning so could not make a drink, No English people work here. Beds make you itch and I caught an eye infection.
