What People are saying

Pub Stay - poor value

Tim B on 13/11/2017 15:34

The Peacock is based in the middle of the town, its hard to get to owing to traffic and parking is limited. If you cant manoeuvre in a small space you will finish up in the car park opposite which is limited to two hours and is full during the day. We stayed two nights and spent a considerable amount of time trying to find parking.
The Peacock is a pub and serves pub food in a pub atmosphere. It sits along side most other places in the town in as much as there is a limited menu of frankly not very good food. Nearby there is a steak and burger restaurant who is better than the norm.
Our room was interestingly decorated (dark) and furnished for affect rather then function. In short there was nowhere to put anything. The floor was on a 12% incline so we slept on a hill and kept waking up as we had moved down the bed. A well used mattress didnt help. We paid nearly £400 for two nights and next time we visit will elect to stay out of town. Breakfast was so basic we didnt bother.
Bakewell is broadly a rip off. There is little in the town to be impressed with and its all over priced with the exception that is of the shoe shop.

Weekend in Bakewell

Well in spite of the hours of amusement I've had reading all the previous reviews and replies, I think I'll deprive you of the chance to argue with me at length!! I only have good things to say about our stay at the Peacock, apart from the weather (and you can't do a lot about that).

Excellent communication during the booking process (wanted to ensure a ground floor room which we got no problem), warm cosy courtyard room with two large comfortable beds, two great nights' sleep, speedy check in (in spite of the pub being heaving when we arrived midway through busy Saturday afternoon). Two excellent breakfasts, two great dinners (huge portions and we enjoyed everything we ate), lots of excellent ale (wish I could get Swift Nick down here), happily managed to squeeze my largish car into the car park both nights. I thought the staff were great, the only unfriendly people I encountered were some of the other overnight guests. You must be doing something right guys, pubs down here are closing at a rate of knots and I haven't seen a bar this busy on a wet Saturday afternoon for a long time. And unless I'm mistaken they were certainly not all tourists like us, I'd certainly be here eating and drinking if I was local.

I've stayed in cheaper places yes, but this was good quality food and accommodation, and I guess I'm used to Cambridge prices where you pay £26 for 5 hours parking on a Sunday, so it doesn't seem that expensive to me. I'd like to see Bakewell when it's not raining, so hope to come back sometime, it's an attractive town. Thank you very much!

Average food, overpriced

BekHB93 on 29/10/2017 16:45

After visiting the Peakcock on an admittedly busy Sunday afternoon, we left disappointed. For two hot sandwiches and a drink each it came to almost £30 and because of this price we expected better quality food and service. Food was placed on the table, but we weren’t asked if we required anything else, so we asked another waitress for some sauces, which never arrived. We then asked again for the sauces, when they finally arrived I’d already eaten half of my food. The food was average and not worth the price. After previously working as a manager in a customer service based role I found the service substandard.

Sadly a bad experience.

I would not recommend staying in Room no.7 it is located directly above the kitchen and subsequently suffers from a strong smell from the kitchen (sadly all the clothes we had in the room with us needed cleaning due to the smell) and also room can be noisey when cleaning is being carried out at the end of the night I had to phone down to manager/owner asking him what the noise was after which we could then hear him shouting at staff to be quite, due to these issues we decided to cancel our 2nd nights stay (a different room was offered but we had already made our minds up that we didn't want to stay any longer, we were refunded 2nd nights cost ).

Must say though that no sort of compensation was offered for the inconvenience for being woken up at 11.40pm by kitchen staff making very excessive noise.

On a plus staff were very friendly and helpful.

Enjoyable October beer in the sun

RobinB1957 on 12/10/2017 17:54

With a group of friends with several hounds in tow after a long walk which took in the Chatsworth estate. We sat outside to enjoy some late afternoon sun and very decent beer which included Peak Ales Chatsworth Gold. We didn't eat but the food being served to nearby tables looked plentiful and tasty so maybe next time.
