Just ordinary

Quite a bit out of town and not in good condition. Large contingent for a conference and odd bars and restaurant facilities. Nice walk around the lake for some exercise. Banquet style food at conference sub par
DO NOT VISIT THIS HOTEL!

I rarely want to give very negative feedback but this hotel really deserves it. When arriving the hotel interior is like from communistic 70's or 80's. Kind of grandeous but shaggy. Don't expect anyone to speak English. We arrived at 20:00 and noticed that the only restaurant in hotel is closing at 21:00 so we went there at 20:20. Nope, they informed that they are closed. Ordered food to room. The food was really lame. No taste at all. The rooms were dirty, falling apart and funnily there was a 1/3 empty small Bacardi bottle in mini bar. Checked the date. It was bottled in 2012. Having been in the hotel for two hours we decided to move out next day although my Chinese colleague had prepaid three nights. The rest of the evening she spent discussing how to get reimbursed.
Convenient conference centre, tired hotel, warm welcome.

The Purple Palace hotel is conveniently nested into hotel rooms in this complex, next to attractive lakes. Conference rooms were spacious and functional and would get three stars but the hotel is in need of an upgrade, being stuck in 1970s decor with basic facilities. The spacious rooms looked tired, were musty, and with a degree of disrepair (for example the bath was stained, as were lampshades). Staff were helpful and friendly though cleaning and room servicing was not consistent . I had a permanently dusty shelf in the bathroom and, as we were near to the lake bugs were expected, dead ones were not cleaned away from a colleagues room.
Food was predominantly local but some of it was pretty unappetising even for seasoned travellers who like to sample local food and have broad tastes.
Investment in this hotel would be worthwhile given the potential of a high number of delegates that the conference centre attracts.
I would choose a different hotel next time.
Pleasant hotel let down by terrible wifi

I stayed in this hotel for three nights in room 7231. I arrived in the dark about 2000. The hotel comprises several buildings. I was in the hotel attached to the conference centre which is away from the main building of the hotel. The room comprised a very large king bed, desk, easy chair, coffee and tea facilities and wardrobe. The wardrobe contained a safe. The instructions were to enter a 3-6 digit number to set the combination. However, only six digits worked. The bathroom comprised a washbasin, WC and large shower. No bath. There was always plenty of hot water.
The room overlooked a lake and had a view towards the nearby hills also known as the purple mountain. There was a notice on the desk requesting guests to keep the windows closed due to mosquitoes. There were also two mosquito deterrent plug devices not in use. However, I saw no sign of mosquitoes during my stay.
I had breakfast twice and this had a reasonable choice, comprising mostly Chinese items. There was also orange juice, yoghurt, fresh fruit and coffee.
There are lovely grounds around the hotel buildings for walking.
The worst part of the stay was the awful wifi. Strangely it seemed to work fairly well on the first night. However, after that it was extremely slow. So bad was it that I gave up on the last day. It would not even load a page on the Internet. For such a supposedly high standard hotel, the slow wifi was disgraceful. If you need wifi access then choose another hotel.
MUSTY. OLD. MOLDY. OVERPRICED. AVOID.

My husband and I booked the ironically named "Purple Palace" as a nice weekend get-a-way from Shanghai. In reality, this place is a MUSTY, unkept and outright dirty place with heavy energy (i.e. spots on the sheets, moldy carpet, cigarette burns in the furniture, TERRIBLE smell, old furniture...). When we complained about the state of the room, we were moved to the "new" building which was a few minutes drive by golf cart. This building was a bit better than the main building, but still smelled quite musty and of stale smoke. Also we only were able to stay in this building for 1 out of the 2 nights of our stay because there was to be construction going on the following day. So on the following day, we were again moved to a completely nasty (I don't use this word lightly) room ~ you can see for yourself in the pictures we've attached to this review ~ the smell was so bad we couldn't even sleep through the night because we were choked by the moldy/stale air in the room. The food in the restaurant didn't seem fresh, everything seemed processed, oily and soggy, and overpriced. We were hoping to have a nice spa treatment together as a couple - well, forget it! First of all, the front desk didn't even have any information about the Spa, it's a separate company that rents the basement space. All they could tell us was that the price was something like 1200RMB for a massage - which is totally crazy! In a very high-end massage place in Shanghai, an oil massage would be around 300RMB. On top of this, another person at the front desk chimed in that the SPA was actually "Men Only" ~ I know "this is China", but we expected more from a supposedly 4.5-star "spa" resort. Literally the only plus was that the hotel was in a quiet area next to a lake, which we unfortunately couldn't really enjoy because it was too hot & humid out to go for a walk around the lake. The indoor pool also seemed rather dirty & musty and we decided not to take our chances with a swim. We had fun sight-seeing in Nanjing during the day and made sure to eat out all meals to avoid eating at the hotel. I find it hard to believe that anyone would rate this place higher than 2 stars. We have traveled a lot, and this hotel was probably the worst considering the price (1,100RMB / 2 nights). I left the same review on ctrip.com, and I believe it was censored (never showed up on the website - maybe the hotel pays the website to censor negative reviews? We booked it on ctrip based on many positive reviews and a total score of 4.6/5, which is quite high). Seriously, AVOID IT! Total waste of money!
