Not worth the wait

We stopped at the Red Lion for some lunch on Saturday, and ordered a pork barm and steak barm both with trimmings including chips and my pork meal was served with a side of gravy.
We waited around 45 min for our food to arrive unfortunately the quality of the meal did not make up for the waIt. The pork was dry which, coupled with the dry barm made it difficult to eat, and although apple sauce was on the plate the amount was not enough to help the food go down the same applied to the gravy which was non descript. The steak barm faired no better but on a positive note the chips were ok
Would we go again, sorry but no, would we recommend it to others, sorry but we wouldnt as I'm quite sure there are nicer places to eat within the area.

Customer service

Picked the Red Lion as a second choice, because the pub in Bakewell we normally stay in disappointed us by refusing to allow us a one- night stay. Given that our usual place charges £130+ per room per night, we looked for alternatives and settled on the Red Lion at just over half the price. I was met at the bar and taken up to the room, given a little overview by the nice gent who showed me round, advising on fire exits, breakfast times etc, with the pleasant parting comment of "if you need anything, just give us a shout". We ate in the pub at night, very very nice beef bap and chips with gravy. We ate again in the morning, a very very nice breakfast. The room was clean and pleasant with a good view over the street, again all very very nice. Drinks were very good, with some nice local ales and better prices than every other pub we visited. I couldn't fault anything. But the best part was the customer service, which was friendly and helpful rather than patronising and obsequious. The people working at the pub were kept very busy but had time for smiles and actually seemed happy to help, which lets face it is the rarest thing ever these days. Discovered the place by accident, won't be returning to the ex-favourite now! Thank you for a lovely stay and I very much admire either the staff training or the choice of staff - cos they are treasures all.
Excellent traditional pub

A real find. Excellent food (had the pie of the day & chips). Hot, freshly made, great portions and value for money. Special mention to Keaunu (aka Dave) for his excellent customer service skills. The young man deserves a bonus! And who would've thought - you can still buy a snowball! Would definitely visit again.

Red Lion lunch

Had lunch in this dog friendly pub. A very good lunch with very quick service. We would go there again. Pub was very busy but service was very efficient. Food was good pub food and also served good coffee. The main bonus was that we could take the dog into the pub on a very cold day.
