What People are saying

Best Stay in our New Zealand Trip

LeoLott on 03/11/2017 06:01

We stayed for 2 nights at The Sounds Retreat during our Honeymoon in New Zealand... and the only regret we have is that it wasn’t a longer stay!

The place is magnificent. The view is unbelievable, the room is very spacious and comfortable, the jacuzzi outside laying over the Charlotte Sounds is breathtaking! All the amenities in the toilette are the highest quality... Even the Gym they have there is pretty cool and well equipped.

Anne and Tony are a very nice couple, who take care of everything to make your stay flawless. They are always very helpful and extremely nice.

Great Stay!

We had the pleasure of staying at The Sounds for the final 4 days of our honeymoon trip. The luxury accommodation, spectacular views and excellent attention to detail made for a memorable stay. One of the best places we stayed throughout the whole south island.. The food was delicious, we especially recommend the 'Trust the Chef' option! Thank you Anne and Tony for the experience, we definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a place to stay around Picton or Havelock. Cheers, Keiran and Jess.

Paradise Found!

From the moment you leave the main road and head up into the native bush there is a feeling that you are going somewhere special, and you are! Not only is the setting spectacular, but the accommodation is of the highest quality with all your comforts catered for. If you are looking for a retreat where batteries get charged and time stands still, this is for you, Tony and Anne (and Bruce!) have created a magical hideaway that makes you leave wondering exactly when you can return!

Idyllic couples retreat

We have travelled a fair amount and in all honesty, this has to be one of, if not, the best places we have stayed. There are no words for the ever-changing view down Queen Charlotte Sound from your room, from the dining cabana and from you own hot-tub. The accommodation is phenomenal with every little detail taken care of. The food at every meal is exceptional, including paired wines at each course for dinner. The location is close to a number of great outdoor activities. And possibly most important are the wonderful hosts, Anne and Tony, who looked after our needs with exemplified personal touches including allowing us to borrow the gorgeous Bruce, their Border Collie, for walks and cuddles, to ensure we didn't miss our own dog too much. We cannot recommend The Sounds Retreat and its' wonderful hosts enough. (and no, we did not know them prior to our amazing experience).

Best view in New Zealand

My wife and I stayed in at The Sounds Retreat for two nights under the individualized care of Tony & Anne Brooker who own it and provide some of the most outstanding guest service we have ever experienced. The Sounds is definitely off the beaten path, quiet and secluded. Our room was spacious with plenty of natural light and an open tiered porch, both of which had the best view in New Zealand. The Sounds is artfully tucked into a hill at the end of Queen Charlotte Sound, and there is a very lovely hot tub on the lower deck. The Sounds breakfast and dinner offerings were truly gourmet, created around our dietary preferences, caringly prepared by our hosts, and served with elegance and grace. There were wonderful wine pairings with our dinners as the Brookers have longstanding relationships with and knowledge of the local vineyards in the Marlborough area. There is great hiking nearby (access to the Queen Charlotte Track) and boating/fishing opportunities based in Picton (on the Lady Karen with wonderful captain Gordon) which we enjoyed through reserve booking for us by the Brookers.
All in all it was a most fabulous stay, and we offer The Sounds our highest recommendation.
