What People are saying

One hundred and five years of history!!

Wineberry39 on 21/11/2017 01:25

The Sylvia hotel is a landmark in Vancouver and the magic of English Bay. Historically it pre-dates the 1st world war! The decor is much like it would have been in the decades following the Great War and the pictures that adorn the hallways is a journey into the past.
The bar and restaurant is ideally located at the front of the hotel with excellent views of the Bay and water activities. The excellent cuisine adds to the pleasure of the experience!
I would recommend suites on the 7th floor with a panoramic view of the Bay and surrounding buildings.
The many choices of restaurants and entertainment offered on adjacent Denman Street, within easy walking distance, adds to the enjoyment of this quaint relaxing experience!

That extra welcoming touch makes it feel like family

As a guest who looked herself out of the room, not only did I have a friendly chat about the hotel and the great book series about the cat Got to Go with the staff who unlocked the room, but in 5 minutes he was back with a complementary copy of the newest book. What a nice touch!! We read the book over dinner when I got home, marvelling again at the adventures of that cat. Life at the Sylvia Hotel was good. It was very very good.

Girls’ weekend

Always wanted to stay at the Sylvia and for the most part, it lived up to our expectations. The location is incredible and though clearly old (built in 1912) and a bit shabby in spots, it’s a very comfortable hotel. The desk staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant and bar were good. The beds were great and our room was huge. The only negative was the bathroom. There was very little water pressure in the shower and the toilet barely fits in the room. We had to sit sideways on it. A bathroom upgrade would be good...
We were next to both elevators but that wasn’t an issue, they aren’t noisy.

Hidden Gem

Jonathan L on 18/11/2017 02:45

The Hotel Sylvia is a hidden gem in plain view. When you book a hotel, you look for a chain because the chain produces a reliable experience, but at an often inflated price. The Hotel Sylvia doesn't belong to a chain, but in my three stays there has produced a great experience.

First and foremost, it is located in a spectacular location, directly on English Bay and in immediate proximity to Stanley Park. These are premier picturesque locations in Vancouver, offering lovely walks and spectacular scenery: woods, water, city.

The hotel itself is "warm." It offers surprises that chains don't. Rooms are idiosyncratically shaped. Some have odd, additional rooms with small beds in them that would serve traveling couples who want their own space. Others offer dramatic views of English Bay without the cost of the premier rooms in a chain.

But like the chains the hotel offers a basic level of comfort: Hot shower. Comfortable beds. Reliable Service. Secure.

That leads me to my next point. The hotel, for what it offers, is cheap compared to chains. Very cheap.

My only complaint is that internet, while free, can be unreliable. Cutting in and out.

But overall, I'd recommend this hotel with 4 thumbs up. The 2 I have and the 2 I don't.

Horrible communication

Gourab R on 15/11/2017 22:06

My friend booked a room for one night with his credit card. Then the night I arrive, they take my card information for "guarantee purposes". I tried to confirm 10 times that they would not charge my card, and they said "dont worry, your card wont be charged".

The trip was for research purposes and we get refunded, whoever pays for it. For that it is important to know who gets charged so that they keeps the receipt.

Then in the morning I confirmed with them not to charge my card and they said "dont worry, your card wont be charged".

When I check a week later, guess what, they did charge my card.

I called them and they said "dont worry this is temporary, it will go away in a week".

A week later, guess what: it didnt go away.

So I call them again, and they say " We will check and call back. We need to (brace for it)
go down to the basement and check the manual records which will take a couple of days".

Whatever.

Guess what, nobody called back.

Then finally I call them today and they said they could not have charged my friends card because it is illegal!

Indeed, if it was, why was I assured that the opposite about 20 times?

Amazing the amount of information people have these days regarding payment and whats illegal and what not. It seems only one person knew something was illegal and the rest of them never mentioned anything about what is legal and what is not.

I am supper annoyed and angry right now!

P.S. The room was ok and not really great.
