Drinks on a summers day

Westward Ho! is a fantastic seaside village in North Devon with a total of 5 pub like establishments. We had visited the Village Inn here on a previous occasion about 12 months ago and scored to pop in for a drink on a fairly warm late summers day.
We found that the previous owners had recently left and the new owners had only been in charge for just over a month so the menu was limited and the atmosphere was not as lively as it had been on the last visit. One of the owners was on duty and proved to be helpful when it came to choosing what to drink.
This place has a number of rooms suitable for large group dining as well as smaller tables for more intimate dining. The room on the car park side where we chose to sit had a lovely conservatory attached and an old type of rattan screen could be placed across the divide of the two rooms to give a feeling of seclusion.
There is also a small courtyard type garden area with seating at the front entrance to the pub as well as a patio area to the rear with wooden tables and benches if you want to sit I the sun and enjoy the views. Well behaved dogs and children are welcome according to the sign and there is even a crèche for husband's while their wives indulge in a bit of retail therapy!
We will be back here in the future when the new owners are more established to see if the establishment retains the huge popularity the previous owners had enjoyed.
A quiet drink

Avoid. We went on for a quiet drink, first mistake. My husband was interrogated to check who he was why he was in the pub and why he hadn't been there for awhile. While he was talking to someone else I then had ten minutes of how tough it was from the landlady, every sentence containing an f.... word. We decided to finish our drinks outside ( in the rain) only to meet a group of walkers who were running away ( their words not mine). My husband works in the beer industry and we appreciate how hard it can be at present. However, swearing at customers is not the way to increase business.
Good traditional pub with comfortable rooms and friendly staff

We stayed one night whilst walking the SW coast path. Our room was very spacious and comfortable and the bathroom also a good size.
The Village Inn is a traditional pub with comfortable bars (and a dog!) and staff were very friendly and helpful. We had dinner there and the food was good (huge quantities) and filling - there was more on offer than your average pub grub menu. There was a good spread at breakfast too.
Comfortable stay.

One night while walking the Coastal Path. Basic, in the sense that, yes, some threadbare spots, but the place is spotless! Comfortable room - yes, water pressure is low, but bath was hot.
Bar food good and very reasonably priced. The staff were so welcoming and helpful - as we had to leave early/before breakfast, staff supplied an excellent picnic lunch for the trail.
We slept well for a reasonable price.
Would not stay there again!

Threadbare carpets. Tidy but generally scruffy. Property din't look as though furnishings had been updated for many years. If you don't mong roughing it - OK. If you appreciate a little bit of comfort - give it a miss.
