staff were brilliant. hotel needs complete restoration................ far too expensive for what we got.......resteraunt was closed, would not go there again...............breakfast was good, but that was all we could have to eat, no resteraunt for mid day or evening meals.

Value and Views

I fell in love with this hotel. But first, let's get the usual stuff out of the way.
Its clean. You get the usual tea/coffee making and shampoo/shower gel miniatures you'd get in most hotels.
The breakfast was made up of really good quality (I think local?) ingredients. The croissants, we agreed(all six of us) were excellent.
Staff were great.
You can walk down steps and a short steep road to get to the beach which doesn't take long. You might need an inhaler and a defibrillator to go back the same way though. With this in mind the local taxis are brilliant and will take you the short journey (£3 from the spyglass to the hotel)
The hotel is tired, it needs a little TLC and the once charming features have been painted shut. I'm sure if you really wanted to pick over it you would find other things..
But above all this, the views are outstanding! You can sleep with the balcony doors open and drift to sleep listening to the waves. Even better, book room 21 where the bed faces the balcony doors, and therefore the sea, and wake up to a view that would make anyone smile.
This hotel is ripe for going all boutique and you'll see that for yourself. Book this tired old matriarch before someone who really knows what they are doing gets their hands on it. It's worth it. My advice. is book a see view and appreciate it for what it is.

Amazing service

I can't thank the hotel enough ( Abbie , think it was a becky as well).

I wanted to make a stay special as I was proposing . I dropped a message on my booking to see if anyone could get me surprise flowers and chocolates .

The team at the hotel were amazing , upgraded room , amazing flowers ,nothing too much trouble . Yes it's an older hotel , but who cares it was romantic , the service was great and an amazing setting .

Breakfast was superb ( just add black pudding )

Try this hotel you won't be disappointed , Ventnor is beautiful and very underrated .

A quirky victorian hotel with lots of stairs that is really a B&B

This was our first visit to Ventnor and we booked the hotel because of the sea views. When we arrived, there was nobody on reception and we had to ring the phone a few times before the lady came up from the bar as she was serving. There is no lift in the hotel so we had to carry our luggage to the room. The room we had was one floor down from the reception area. The restaurant was then another floor down again so we were sandwiched between the reception upstairs and the restaurant downstairs. This was fine until 7am in the morning when the staff started to get the breakfast ready. Doors banging and loud voices made this a rather noisy room.
The room itself was a large room and clean but the sloping floor in the bathroom and the bedroom by the bed made me feel like I had vertigo. The french doors leading to onto the balcony had locks that didn't fit too well and the ironwork was in need of a good paint.
The stairs that connect each of the floors are a beautiful Victorian style but they are sloping slightly too which can be considered as another quirky feature. We decided to go out and just use the hotel as a base to sleep in.
The staff do not wear any form of uniform so it can be a bit tricky to work out who is staff and who is the guest.
I would agree with the other reviews on this site that it's a traditional seaside hotel which has seen better days and needs huge investment in it to upgrade it. It is also very informally run, the staff have multi roles. So, I would say it's a good B&B as it's clean, the staff are friendly and the breakfast was ok too.

Would I come back and stay again.......sadly no.
