This was my first trip to Japan, so perhaps this is highly rated compared to other hotels in Kyoto, but I do stay in hotels about 150 days a year, and having just stayed at the Westin Indianapolis a week before I can tell you that this is definitely not a 4 star hotel.
First I will say that the staff was fantastic, and ready to help in anyway they could. When I moved to a standard room, there was an analog clock that did not glow or light up to see in the dark, so I requested a digital clock for the room. I ended up with 3 employees in my room, making sure that it was hooked up, and I was happy. Fantastic service.
I stayed at this property for 8 nights. The first night on my own dime, in a "Deluxe" room, which I certainly did not think was very deluxe with all the stains on the carpet. But when I had to move to a conference provided "standard" room on the second night.... lets say that I realized the difference. The standard room had even more stains on the carpeting and everything else in the room was at least 15- 20 years old, except for TV. While the Deluxe room had a thermostat for the A/C, the standard room was cooled by a central air conditioning system, with nothing but a fan switch in the room. Since the A/C unit does not have it's own air conditioner, it also did not have a cold air return to help remove humidity from the room. So the room ends up being very humid, and not very comfortable.
The prices of drinks and some of the food in the hotel would be something you would expect in a 5 star hotel. Instead, you get a 2 star hotel with 5 star prices.
If I were to return to Kyoto, unless they do a full top to bottom renovation, I would look elsewhere for lodging.

We enjoyed our stay but found the layout of the hotel confusing with long hallways. The bar and restaurants were located, with the exception of a tea shop, well away from lobby area again down a long hallway without much signage. The bar had live entertainment which was nice but drinks were rather expensive. Our room overlooked an inner courtyard which would have been nice except for sandbags holding down plastic the entire stay. No activity or work effort ongoing sonI presume it had been that way for sometime. Staff were nice, arranged luggage transfer between hotels, cabs were plentiful and subway nearby. No restaurants other than within the hotel within walking distance. Next time I think I would opt for a hotel closer to downtown though the outdoor setting was nice.

Typical Westin. Close to Gion and a number of famous Temples and Shrines. Hotel offers a free shuttle to the center of Gion and the Kyoto train station. You can get picked up from the train station too. Hotel is right nest to the subway making it very convenient

Quick one night stay with friends.... Kyoto was absolutely beautiful!! Very quiet and felt like I really experienced the true Japanese culture. The hotel was located in a quiet area... Not far from the hot spots. Our room was a little small especially for two double beds.... but a great view of the city and had a balcony! The lobby is extremely inviting and large..... the concierge gave us excellent recommendations on nearby shows and restaurants.

The room is clean and comfortable. The staff are friendly and helpful. They can communicate well in English. The restaurants inside the hotel are also good with different variety of Japanese good.
There is shuttle bus to and from the Kyoto train station every 20 minutes.
Highly recommended.
