Could not fault a single thing....very friendly proprietor, clean room, nice breakfast and good price. Would definitely use again. Good location for racecourse too. Came here as a couple for Newmarket Nights but The Wheatsheaf is very family friendly, would not hesitate to bring children.

We stayed for one night after a visit to the races. Phil, the owner since December 2016, was very welcoming, and even helped us arrange a taxi to the races and back.
The pub only has a few bedrooms, and ours was quite small, but it was clean, nicely decorated, with a view over the garden, and had everything you need for a short stay. There were tea and coffee making facilities and nice biscuits! The bed was comfy, and I'm quite fussy. Wifi was free and worked fine.
The pub has a dining area, bar and a snug. There is also a nice garden, and a grassy play area.
Breakfast was included. We weren't offered any choice (apart from whether we wanted tea or coffee to drink), but we were served a very nicely cooked full English breakfast - egg, bacon, sausage, baked beans, hash brown, tomato and fried bread.
We didn't personally try any other food, but our travelling companions had scampi and chips and were very happy with it.
There was a nice atmosphere in the bar, especially if you like chatting about horse racing, but don't listen to any of their betting tips!
We very much hope that Phil makes a success of the business, as he works very hard and is such a great host. We will definitely stay there the next time we need accommodation in Newmarket.
Vile...

I would not recommend this hotel to anybody! I've never been anywhere that was so run down and dirty. The shower head was disgusting, the windows were surrounded with black mould, there were damp traps on top of the wardrobe, the carpet was burnt in places, the sheets were stained and the back of the shower completely fell apart! I also suffered injuries to my knees, elbow, shoulder and foot after returning to the hotel at night when there was no lights outside at all and it was so dark that I fell. The place is a hovel I've been told by many people that since it changed hands 2 years ago it's standards have dropped massively and I can see this is the case. Stay clear of this place if you value your health.
Good breakfast!

We made a last minute reservation at The Wheatsheaf in mid June as we decided to go to Newmarket races. When we arrived the staff were very helpful and took us straight to our room. I was pleasantly surprised by the room, not very big but it was clean and well presented with towels and shower gel laid out on the bed.
We had a quick drink at the bar while we waited for our taxi to the racecourse, which the barman kindly ordered for us.
There was a wedding on at the pub so when we arrived back after a long day it was a little noisy, we were in a room facing the courtyard seating area and as it was a very hot day we had no choice but to have the window open. In all honesty I was so tired the noise didn't bother me for long.
We both really enjoyed our fry up the next morning, I don't normally eat fried bread but it was so tasty I ate the lot!
Would definitely stay here if we ever go to the races again!
Sunday lunch

The Wheatsheaf has been revamped, redecorated and reopened. We went today to sample the Sunday lunch. Where to start!! The food was absolutely gorgeous. We had the chicken and the lamb. The chicken was a lovely juicy whole breast, beautifully cooked and served with a variety of delicious vegetables, well-cooked and extremely well presented. There were huge Yorkshire puddings and stuffing balls, neither of which I like, but my husband said they were delicious. The gravy was hot, tasty and plentiful. The lamb, although served in rather thin slices, was also tasty and plentiful, complemented beautifully by the lovely veggies. We had a lovely bottle of Pinot Grigio to wash it down with which although a bit pricey, was quite delicious. We couldn't manage pudding after our main course, but the dessert list was comprehensive, with a very good choice. All in all, a lovely meal, with no negatives at all. We shall certainly return, although I understand that they intend to stop serving carvery for the summer, replacing it with barbecue in their lovely gardens. Luckily, we love barbecue too, so will be more than happy to have that instead of a roast. Lovely food, lovely staff, lovely location. Who could ask for any more?!!!
