What People are saying

Family-run property really close to the Cloud Forest Reserve

Jo M on 09/06/2017 17:56

Our wood-panelled room (no. 7) was spacious and had a covered/netted balcony looking out over cloud forest. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was well-appointed and clean. Handy note: the room safe was in a cupboard in the bathroom that escaped immediate notice! The food served in the hotel's restaurant was really good - I had a particular thing about the chicken casado (mixed plate), which at $12.20 was a big plate of food which always hot the spot. Pilsen/Imperial beer was $3.25 and a fruit punch cocktail $5.30. The staff were very friendly and accommodating.
The location was great, ten minutes up the track to the hummingbird gardens (stunning hummingbirds coming to feed on honey feeders - violet sabrewings, purple-throated mountain gems etc.) and the entrance to the cloud forest reserve. Walking downhill, it was about 10-15 mins walk down a pretty steep hill to the nearby small town of Santa Elena.
We booked this hotel via Trailfinders and also a tour of the cloud forest, which was well worthwhile. Despite the rain, we got a decent sighting of a male Quetzal and a green-fronted lancebill hummingbird, with a beak almost as long as its body. Walking through the cloud forest is brilliant - but busy. Lots of other tours around.

In the Cloud Forest

Great location and views from the mountain view suite. We saw amazing wildlife just sitting by the window which is a great addition to the guided tours in the reserve itself. The staff are lovely.

2 small complaints; 1/ would be that the hallways that lead to the room should have motion sensors instead of being left on constantly all night. Although the hallway doors are closed by guests. The lights attract a lot of insects that can be an irritation if they get into your room.
2/ the restaurant menu was over priced. We therefore decided to walk to the town 6km away and occasionally would plan to get the bus back to the hotel (as it was up hill and there was always a risk of a downpour around 4-5pm onwards). In town, we had some amazing food at the local Soda for next to nothing. Highly recommended. Great supermarket for some good wine too.

A welcome oasis after some of the hotels in Panama & Costa Rica

After roughing it in Panama and Costa Rica I fell in love with my spacious room at the Trapp Family Lodge. What a difference it makes when a family run a hotel with love and consideration for their guests.

My lovely room had two double beds and a closed in terrace overlooking a lovely garden. There was a real sense of caring for their guests and providing everything for a relaxing stay. This included a multi-plug point for charging all your electronics at once and excellent wifi in the room.. The bathroom had a large walk-in shower and the safe was in a cupboard in here at a comfortable height to use. There was a fabulous range of Raw Botanical products hand made in Costa Rica in the bathroom. These included ylang ylang shampoo, banana conditioner, papaya tangerine body wash and lemon grass insect repellent.A hairdryer was supplied. There were two recycle bins in the room and larger bins in the grounds. They really are committed to their environment. The restaurant served excellent meals throughout the day and there was a happy hour.

In the foyer there were a range of Monteverde natural cosmetics on sale. I bought a coffee and coconut body scrub for $8 and later noticed the same product for sale in the souvenir shops in the town for $13. So if these appeal stock up at the hotel.

This was my favorite hotel during my six country Central American tour.

Hidden Gem

Recently stayed here and it was beautiful! The rooms had incredible hard wood floors with comfortable beds and a nice shower. The front desk staff was incredibly helpful and so was our server who did it all Randall! Dinner there was very nice; it was a quiet romantic restaurant. Breakfast was ok, nothing too exciting. The rooms did not have AC or fans though so it does get hot very quickly unless you leave the screen windows open. Overall beautiful stay and close to the cloud forest so it feels like you are in the clouds itself!

Resplendant "It certainly is"

We travelled from our last hotel via the ferry on Lake Arenal this was no ordinary crossing but very scenic and our captain very informative of the surrounding and wildlife we saw,the crossing was about forty minutes and on the other side of the lake our mini bus awaited to take the road(bumpy track for miles bewarned but great fun)there were porters at the other side of the lake to take you're luggage small remuneration,We also had a couple of phot stops and toilet stop at a nice little café.When we arrived at the lodge we went through the town,Again we ate at the hotel in the evening but the national park was only 15 minute walk with a little café so we had our lunch there. When we got to our lodge again we had a fantastic view overlooking the forest truly amazing. When we first went to the park we enquired about the price which was$20 plus Additional$17 if you want a guide.as it was late in the afternoon we went to a small café on the hill just outside the park which had bird feeders you've never seen so many and different variety's in you're life. The following day we made our way back to the park in search of the Twichers Holy Grail The Resplendant Quetzal bird,we decided to go on our own but the previous night I went onto a well known website to find the mating call of the Quezal.we were walking around about 3 hours and bumped into other groups with guides and they hadn't seen one (no guarantees with nature)it was when we were walking back to the reception from the waterfall we heard the call we've found it what a sight it truly is Resplendant and was an added bonus to our holiday. The last thing my wife wanted to do before we left it's'on her bucket list was Zip wire over the cloud forest .This we did breathtaking literally it's a must.Again we ate in the hotel wonderful restaurant good choice of food again excellent service.
