What People are saying

Wonderful clean hostel

Greg L on 08/11/2017 15:32

This is one of the great favorite 'unknowns'. The hostel is in a great location 2 blocks from Marquês de Pombal. This is a major shopping area and crossroads of the city. During the off season and when the hostel is not full you can get great cheap rooms. There is a large outdoor area,2 bars and the best breakfast I've ever seen.

"Worst hostel in the world"

AussieX_21 on 15/09/2017 09:01

Well where to start ??? I'm not really one for writing negative reviews but this hostel was that bad I fell I need to give others fair warning.
Starting at the start check in, we stayed here 5 nights and had the change rooms 3 times. On day 1 we were with a large group and some rooms were still not ready until after 6pm. We had to check out the next day and when we returned at 430pm our room was still not ready to check In until 5pm. After 2 more nights we checked out to check in again the next day and you guessed it late check in this one the earliest getting into our room about 4:15pm. While waiting for check in the hostel offers a luggage room, however the door is wide open and never locked so literally anyone can walk in and access anyones luggage. Along with check in you had to pay a deposit of €5 per key and €20 yes €20 just for an air conditioner remote. You also had to pay a tourist tax, which yes I understand this is a thing (even know we didn't pay it anywhere else in Portugal) but it was to be paid is cash only .... seems a little suss. Alright so let's head to the room with all my luggage oh wait the lifts are broken, out of my 6 times (check in check out) the lifts worked a total of 2 times the rest we were forced to carry luggage all the way up the stairs to the 4th, 5th and 6th floors and when it does work it still only goes to level 5 no level 6 access. Now we enter the room there is 4 bunks stacked side to side with not even enough room to swing a cat, let alone store your luggage and no where to lock up your luggage either. If you were the unlucky sole who drew the top bunk well good luck getting up as half the ladders were facing the wall and the others were stuck in a gap suited to only the skinniest of children. Now I sit on my bed to charge my phone after a long day waiting to check in but where's the power point, the room has 3 power points for 8 people and 1 is broken, each bed has a light but it needs to be plugged into one of these 3 power points rendering them useless for the entire room to use. Now it's stinking hot in here so I turn on the air con with my €20 remote beautiful it works, but it's pointed to the ceiling and you can't change it because the flap is broken. Outside the balcony is quite large that's because you share it with 3 other rooms who can all just wonder up and down as they please. After the balcony I shut the curtains to cover the window to keep the room cool however the curtain only covers 80% so I hope you like early morning wake ups. The floor fells like it hasn't been swept this year, so don't take your shoes off. Probably one of the most disgusting things was that our friends bed was next to a wall the had a massive blood stain all over it. Entering the bathroom there is no lock but in place there is a bent up coat hanger you can hook around the door to hold it shut that's handy. Finished with the toilet to find there is no toilet paper supplied to the room lucky I bought my own but unlucky the flusher doesn't work properly, after about 30 pushes it finally takes (this wasn't a one off occurrence it rarely worked). Time for a shower well the curtain doesn't cover the whole window and there is no frosting on the window so you never know your neighbour might be watching. The shower is run on a push button system, god knows why and it runs for a massive 15 seconds long because that's that average shower time I guess ? Now the facilities or lack there of, there is 1 washing machine for the entire hostel so you can imagine the queue for that. There is no kitchen so don't buy your own food, there are BBQs but your not aloud to use them. The hostel offer a BBQ dinner "available most nights", now in our 5 nights they fired up the BBQ once. Finally the staff at reception were rude, arrogant and most of the time unwilling to help or on the occasions we caught someone willing to help they gave us incorrect information. Several different people that we knew had requested to speak to a manger who coincidentally was never available.
All this being said I would be rude not to mention the positives of this hostel however few there was. Starting with and everything based around the, downstairs bar and outdoor terrace area. This was a great setting with plenty of seats for everyone and even offered a blow up pool that was filtered and clean for a quick cool off. The bar staff were all friendly, helpful and always up for a chat, and well happy hour from 5-7 every night always went down a treat with 2 pints for €3 or 2 spirits for €4 (pretty much all drinks 2for1).

Excellent ! Value for money! Wonderful staff!!!!

We have stayed with Hans Brinker on 3 occasions in the last month, we simply lowed it so much! Very clean rooms and bathroom, large beds, towels changed regularly.
Buffet breakfast, bread rolls, cheese, ham, fruit, coffee, various kinds of tea, sweet croissants, jam, butter, yogurt, cereals and much more... Great, close to city location (3km walk) with super well informed staff that are always happy to help and support you no matter your need or request. Hostel is huge, with mini pool and garden area where nice music is played in the evening and "happy hour" drinks are being poured.
Wifi worked good, but not in all the rooms we have stayed in, check with staff before checking in....
We were allowed to leave our main luggage in lockers for few weeks while we have travelled Europe. We were amazed with the level of support ! Simply WOW!
Staff were happy to order taxi, uber to Airport and help us with tips on where to shop, each and get a metro.... Great decor !
Thank you all!
We will be back, HUG MORE!

All the best!

Terrible! Smells like gutter

Miguel N on 02/09/2017 16:38

We picked this due to its low price for a single overnight stay. We didn't expect much to begin with and we were totally surprised on how bad a hostel can be. So here goes the story (grab something to eat):
We arrive at the hostel at 7.45pm to check-in, we are greeted by a friendly brazilian guy (with perfect portuguese accent), in front of us a group of brazilian guys get a 600 something room, top level and what not, our check-in goes without issues although we are surprised by a 5€ deposit per room key, we complied and got ourselves one room key, we get room 204. First room on the second floor, which is the first floor with rooms as the ground floor is the reception and the first floor is the bar/rooftop. So all in all we got the closest room to the bar, which is usually the worst room, we didn't complain and went to our room, the elevators didn't work or were stuck on a floor, we couldn't use them anyway so we carried our bags to the second floor in a hurry and dropped our bags and left as we were late to dine with friends.
We came back at midnight, the stairs to our room were dirty as hell (I know this is a hostel but there's a minimum of hygiene, photos attached), not bothering as we only wanted to get some sleep and we had to wake up early. We get to our room and it smells like gutter, like there was an open gutter in our room. We immediately closed the bathroom door and went back to the reception where the same brazilian guy where he told us, and I quote, "there's nothing I can do to help, try opening the windows" and refused to discuss the matter any further. The room windows gave access to a common balcony where anyone from any other room can access ours through it. We didn't want to be a-holes so we gave it a go and went back to our room and opened the window. Waited for maybe 20 minutes and the smell was just as intense, in the meantime we checked the beds sheets, stained with a footprint and the remains of what seemed to be blood and brown matter (photos attached). At this point we go back to the reception to complain again and suddenly when we threatened to write a formal complaint to the hygiene authorities an available room pops up and we get moved to room 608. It's 1.30am at this point and we just want to sleep. We pack our bags and move to the 6th floor (elevator only goes to the 5th, no worries I can can carry the bags). This time the room is fairly new, smells nice, good bathroom but wait, the window lock is broken so we couldn't close it but hey, at least the sheets are clean so we gave up and went to sleep.
At this point we reflected on what happened, we got discriminated in our own country, being sent to the worst room, not being respected to have our issues dealt with until we threatened to take action against them. This is the worst place I've been in my life. Yes I am Portuguese and yes I'm writing this review in English so everyone can read it.

DON'T GO THERE

RinatAvrina on 27/08/2017 22:31

I'm traveling for over a decade, slepped in all kind of places and I can definitely say that this is one of the worst places I've ever stayed in.
We were 3, we booked a private room for 4 people and stayed there for 3 nights.
The room was really dirty and uninviting. and on the first night the bathroom's door fell on us.
The bathroom was full with mold and we didn't have hot water which was very annoying since the nights were pretty cold.

We complained several times about the hot water issue, but no one seems to care about it. All they did is saying we need to speak with the manager, but guess what? There was no manager to talk to. So even though we paid for a private room with private bathroom we had to use the staff's shared bathroom for the entire time we were there. They also said we are gonna get our money back but guess what?? We got nothing. I Know this is an hostel and I shouldn't expect much, but there are minimum standards for every place, the Hans Brinker has none of them.

I can keep going on and on about how bad this place is and about the inefficient staff.. but I won't. so take my advice go somewhere else.
