Day trip

We spent the day at Woolley for my son’s birthday. On the day and before all the staff were excellent; friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. The hotel is lovely to explore. Wait times for service, particularly drinks, can be a little long but this just meant more time for us to relax and enjoy.

Birthday Weekend

Woolley Grange is a beautiful family and pet friendly hotel and spa set in the rolling hills at the southern edge of the Cotswolds near the very pretty market town of Bradford-on-Avon.

The hotel creates a cosy, informal atmosphere and tries its best to make you feel at home with its comfy seats, open fires and lots of little seating areas. It can get a little smoky at times (from the open fires) and be prepared to share some of the common areas with four-legged companions (but not the restaurant).

The rooms are all individual and unique. Some would benefit with a bit of a refresh in places, particularly the bathrooms where I would describe the showers as ‘adequate’. However our room was very clean and well maintained. Be careful when booking your room to mention if you have any disabilities or mobility issues (for you and your dogs) as some rooms are easier to get to than others.

The food was generally excellent with some very well cooked and presented meals. Unfortunately the service at times let them down with long waits between orders being taken and courses arriving, which is not great when you have young kids. There was also a mix up with the specials were we were told (on the Friday) that they would be served the following night and then subsequently found out (on the Saturday) when we tried to order that they were not. However, in the end the staff did manage to provide the specials for a couple of members of our party. It did put a little bit of a tarnish on a 70th Birthday celebration for a family member.

Despite the poor service at times, all the staff were incredibly friendly, amiable, and polite; if a little inefficient. I understand that they were a bit short-staffed and a new Manager had just taken over but as a paying guest that should make no difference to the level of service provided. There were mistakes with the billing where other people’s meals and drinks were charged to our rooms, costs that had already been paid during our stay were added to the bill again, and additional charges (private dining) were also added were these costs had not been disclosed at the time of booking.

The spa is a bit basic with a pool with a sauna and steam room, and a small treatment area but is clean and a pleasant enough space to spend a few hours relaxing.

Overall a pleasant enough stay in a lovely hotel with good food and a friendly, cosy atmosphere that was let down by poor levels of service and poor management of the back office. For the price I would have expected better.

fantastic hotel

We had such a lovely stay at Woolley Grange! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and went over and beyond what one would expect. Our room was clean, well equipped and very atmospheric. The hotel and grounds are extremely family friendly and we felt instantly relaxed. We can highly recommend Woolley Grange and will definitely return in the future.

What a welcome

We were met by very welcoming staff who couldn't do enough to please. The only problem we had was our room was over the kitchen and the hum from the extractor fan was a little disturbing, so we asked to change rooms straight away and this was agreed to and arranged without any fuss or argument. The facilities of the hotel were very family friendly and the grounds delightful. The breakfast was fantastic with loads of choice and the evening meal delicious, with a change of menu each night. The spa though small was an additional attraction and we loved the pool and sauna. The steam room wasn't available but that didn't bother us at all and I had a great half hour massage booked at very short notice. All in all a lovely hotel in a great part of the country.

Overpriced and poorly run

They first day we were here we were quite happy with most aspects of our stay. The staff seemed nice, the ambiance was cozy, the family amenities seemed great and the food was pricey but decent. Then it went downhill. On the first morning breakfast took forever. Despite the restaurant being 25% full the staff hardly showed their faces and it took forever to order. The kitchen was slow and they got our order wrong as well! We had to ask for our coffee three times before it was brought out. They ran out of glasses as well so we couldn't have any juice/water so we resorted to using coffee cups as our coffee hadn't arrived anyways. Dinner was also disappointing. The food is very expensive for what it is and we spent even more on the wine. We ordered a bottle of wine and it didn't come out until after we had finished our starters! I had to point out to the staff that our wines hadn't arrived and they said it was on its way. It's not like you have to cook or prepare the wine! It's just a cork that gets taken out assuming it's not a twist top and that's it! How hard is that. It took them ages to clear our starter plates anyways so there was lots of time to catch up on the wine. The children's portions are expensive too. 6 quid for a toddlers bowl of pasta and it's tiny. Must cost 20p to make it tops. And I hope you like salt because the greens with my lamb were intolerably salty. Anyways that's enough about the restaurant. The spa was a big disappointment as well. We bought a facial + massage and a body scrub + massage. There are only 2 treatment rooms so you have to book early like we did. The rooms are not very nice and it was too bright to have a relaxing massage. The music was too loud and the chair the masseuse was sitting on squeaked so much it was like finger nails on a chalkboard. They use elemis products but the containers they are in are so bloody noisy. The pumps, caps and tubes all made so much noise I couldn't relax. And you can hear the kids running around and crying in the lobby area, not to mention people walking noisily in the hallway. So much for relaxation. They misbooked the body scrub as well. We were supposed to have a scrub then massage, but only the massage was booked. There was a scrub appointment booked after the massage but it was booked in their system with no name. The spa facilities are pretty lame. It's a tiny pool, a sauna and a steam room. There's nowhere to lie down and sit by the pool. There's a dirty bean bag and a couple of benches but that's it. Suffice it to say it's more a kids pool than a spa. Don't be fooled! I haven't even gotten to the worst part of our stay. We had booked by phone, for 3 nights in one of their joining rooms, but we got a call on our third day (after our 2nd night) when we were out in Bradford on Avon from the hotel saying we had only booked 2 nights. We told them that was wrong and they insisted we move to another room as the next guests had asked specifically for our room and that we would be moved to a similar room instead. When we got back to the hotel we found that we had been moved to another more modern building in the back of the grounds that had one bed and one sofa bed and was significantly worse than our initial room. When we went to complain the manager suggested it was the same price and we were lucky that a room was available. She suggested that it was our fault for the misbooking and that because she hadn't been on the phone with us when we booked it she could only go by what the system had. Of course the problem is that we had booked by phone and the whoever input it into their system had made a mistake. We even booked our crèche, breakfast and dinner for all the days we were supposed to be there but that wasn't enough to convince the manager. Eventually she changed the room rate to the correct rate for that room, but we didn't come all this way and spend all this money to stay in a sub par room because they messed up the booking. You would think the manager would give something in return for us giving up our room and spending nearly 2 grand for 3 nights stay! It's our first time here and would never recommend to anyone to stay here. Please spend your money elsewhere, it's not worth the disappointment.
