Couples Getaway

Norman S on 30/10/2017 05:04

I had booked a 1 bedroom Deluxe for 5 nights. I am a timeshare owner and always enjoyed my stays. This was my first visit with the Wyndham Canterbury at San Francisco. I read all the prior reviews and thought i would give you the reader more information that can be helpful.
Transportation:
I could have used the BART subway system as it would have been inexpensive, plus it takes you to Powell station where i would have had to walk 10-15 minutes to the resort, but i opted to use the Lyft Line for 2 which came out to $20, and it takes you right to the front door of the Canterbury, and cheaper than a regular Taxi.
Lodging:
The room was nice and simple. In the old days a deluxe room would have included a full kitchen; but now the deluxe rooms are only partial kitchen and does not include cooking. You will have to reserve a presidential to have that included. The good news about that is that we get to eat out all the time and try exotic and new restaurants all over. Restaurants are a dime a dozen in the area. Plus we don't have to cook like we do at home and take a break from the kitchen. The bad news is that you have to plan accordingly as restaurants are twice as much in San Francisco then it would be back home. A typical lunch or dinner item will start anywhere from $15 up to $35 per person depending on where you go and what you eat.
If I ever do come back I will for sure request a presidential so as to save some funds on eating in as well as out.
My wife and I opted to go for an Resort update as they promised that it would be one hour long with no sales and hard pressure buying. The deal was for two passes to the hop-on hop-off Big Bus City tours which is a double decker bus that takes you into and around the city as well as a $25 American Express gift card. Needless to say the resort update was about two hours instead of the one hour and they included a lunch which happened to be only a ham and cheese sandwich with a small container of potato salad and a chocolate chip cookie and a Gala apple. You would think a high-class and Resort would offer a lunch buffet or something a little bit more elaborate since they indicated that the chef prepare something special. A bit cheesy if you ask me. But the gift package was worth the deal since out on the street the Big Bus City Tour roughly runs about $35 per person and an upgrade would be about $50 a person. The upgrade would include 48 Hours instead of the single day 24 hour at an additional $10 per person. So when we went on the bus tour we were encouraged to use the American Express card since they can apply the $20 from that but unfortunately the guy had this card reader and only accepted cards with chips on it and the American Express card did not have a chip so ended up paying out of pocket for the upgrade.
If we had rented a car it would have cost us $34 plus tax valet service per night, along with the daily car rental. Definitely not needed since most things in the area is within walking distance. Union Square is about 5 minutes away and Chinatown another 5 maybe 10 minutes away walking distance. We did have a mini fridge in our one-bedroom deluxe and so we were able to find a couple of neighborhood markets in the area and bought simple fruit and milk and some essentiels to at least cover our breakfasts.
The resort also had daily ice cold water and lime water and unsweetened tea throughout the day in the main lobby. Every morning you can come back down into the lobby and drink a fresh cup of coffee or hot cocoa for on-the-go.

The nice thing about the Big Bus hop-on hop-off Tours is that you can utilize it as part of the bus system instead of taking the muni which is the regular bus system which is about $2.50 per ride. No need for the bus system since the Big Bus hop-on hop-off tour takes you to most key essential areas and so with 48-hour upgrade we had two days coverage to any local place we wanted to go to day and night. The first time we used the hop-on-hop-off bus we just decided to utilize the regular tour to check out all the key areas which included the Golden Gate Bridge as well as Chinatown and Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf. The last bus tour ends about 5 p.m. before it starts the city night tour which was also included in the upgrade. The City night tour was roughly from 6 p.m. to about 9 p.m.
My wife and I were thinking of doing some tours and looked into the Epass which you can locate by going to costco.com and type in Epass San Francisco. It offers up to 15 different tour spots in which you only choose 4 that you can utilize for $69 per person. But even though the tourist spots seem attractive and nice I would recommend reading each and every attraction before opting to pick as I was surprised on some of the negative reviews on some of the keytours that reflect on the highlights. So we opted not to hit some of those key tours for that very reason. But that is a decision each person has to make but I would recommend reading the reviews before deciding and not going to take the tour attracting, only to find out boy I wish I didn't go on this tour. The Big Bus City tour upgrade also included a trip to Sausalito which is just outside of San Francisco on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge which was a very nice quaint little town with gift shops and dining areas. I thought it was very nice but not worth hanging out the whole day. So we did stay for a couple of hours to check things out before getting back on the hop-on-hop-off bus and head back into San Francisco.
Dining:
If you choose to eat out at one of the outdoor eateries at Fisherman's Wharf like fish and chips then I would recommend not to dine outside where the seagulls are. They are very aggressive and even attacked my wife as she stood in an open area where they came swooping down and knocked out her food from her hands and before you know it they had finished off her plate for her. So I would recommend quaint and quiet places where there are very little to none seagulls in the area. I only found that out as I was sitting at a table in the midst of hundreds of Seagulls in the area as one Seagull was distracting me and another seagull quickly swooped out of the sky and picked up one of my fried fish and flew out before I realized it. And then turning around to see my wife being attacked. Not physically but more emotionally as they knocked the food out of her hand and did the rest by gobbling it up. Just a warning for you land lubbers out there who are not used to the Sea and want to just come and sit and enjoy a nice meal in hand.
I hope you found this information useful if you're planning a trip to stay at the Wyndham Canterbury.

Wyndham's Finest

We have stayed at Wyndham's all over the US with my best friend's timeshare. There are many similarities to each one. The one thing that makes this Wyndham stand alone is the friendly service. The doormen are super friendly & helpful. The staff makes you feel at home in their city of San Francisco and want you to make the best of your time. The rooms are very clean & was renovated 4 years ago. We were disappointed in our small bed. It looked to be a double, maybe a queen? Only other issue which is dumb, they have a fancy facet in the kitchen. It is very difficult to operate & horrible to turn off. On the flip side, water is filtered & great for drinking. I would definitely recommend staying here but ask about the size of the bed if it matters. There is also a fold out couch as usual.

Exceeded expectations

Booked a 2 night stay in a one bed apartment for 4 adults as half the price of booking separate hotel rooms. OK, so we had to use the sofa bed which when pulled out made the living room area feel small but it didn't bother us as we weren't in the room that much.

The one bed suite was lovely and stylishly furnished with a large bathroom (shower only). Both the double bed and sofa bed were extremely comfortable with high quality linens provided. The kitchenette was well equipped with a Cuisinart coffee maker and blender plus coffee sachets provided. Wardrobe space was also more than adequate. The only complaints about the actual room would be that the room didn't get cleaned but we were warned at check-in this maybe the case and also knowing 4 people were staying I thought the sofa bed would have been made up already. It wasn't something I wanted to do after a twelve hour flight from London!

The staff were friendly and helpful when we asked questions about the area and also ordering us taxis when requested plus in the morning free tea, coffee and hot chocolate were available in the lobby which was a nice touch. Also the WiFi was good with all 4 of us connected on various devices at the same time.

The location is superb, just a few minutes walk from Union Square with plenty of eateries, convenience stores and bars nearby.

We really enjoyed our stay and time in San Fran and will be recommending the Wyndham Canterbury to my sister when she travels next year.

Thanks Wyndham!

A beautiful city on the bay

We recently visited San Francisco. We stayed at the Wyndham Canterbury.
We had a two bedroom which was nicely decorated. There was not a full kichen, which was a surprise to me.i assumed that there was a full kitchen, but there was no stove and a small refrigerator and dish washer. We made it work
The condo is located in the heart of San Francisco. It does cost $40 a day to park your car there and it is off site so the valet had to retrieve the car each time.
There are so many options for dining within walking distance.one of our tour guides said you could eat at a different place seven days a week for ten years and not go to the same restaurants. Not sure about that?
Attractions are plentiful. We went to Napa Valley for wine tasting.Muir Woods to see the giant redwoods.Alcatraz prison.Fishermans Wharf,China Town and Lombard Street.
All in all a great trip.we would definitely stay at Canterbury. Great staff and very helpful.

Great affordable accommodation

We have a two bedroom suite and apart from some hiccups with housekeeping over making up a sofa bed, we are very comfortable and have everything we need. Smart decor, very friendly and helpful staff, excellent location and a pretty good price. Highly recommended.
