We were a family group and had two twin rooms. Very spacious, clean and comfortable. Great breakfast and lovely service from all the staff that we met. Very friendly and attentive staff. Staff gave helpful information about the local area.

Wonderful stay

I wouldn't stay again

My main complaint after staying at the York House Hotel was that my room was not available at check in time. I booked to stay at this hotel with friends and the bride and groom to attend their wedding. I booked a single room £75 and check in was 2 pm on the day of the wedding. I thought i would have ample time to change and apply makeup prior to meeting friends to attend the wedding at 3.00 pm. I arrived at the hotel at 1.50 pm and managed to squeeze into the last available parking space in the car park. Other guests were still arriving and could not park.

On entering reception i gave my name and said i have made a reservation. The computer was checked and i was made aware that my room was not quite ready, it would be 10 mins. As i was a little early I paid for my room and was asked to take a seat. I saw many other guests come and go whilst sat waiting. At 2.15 pm I again checked with reception to enquire when my room would be ready as I was supposed to be meeting friends at 3.00 pm and I needed to get ready. They phoned house keeping and i was informed it would be a further 5 mins and asked "is that okay" I was given an explanation that the person who had stayed in the room the night before had been late checking out. I did point out that that was not my problem really, they should ensure guests leave in a timely manner to turn rooms around. At 2.25 pm my room was finally ready. This did not leave me enough time to get ready comfortably.

On entering the room, it was very dingy. The only decent light source was in the bathroom. There were some questionable stains on the walls of the room, around the skirting board at the side of the toilet which was very off putting. It also had an overwhelming smell of air freshener, I presume as housekeeping had just literally left the room as I got to the room door, they had sprayed this to make it seem cleaner.

Whilst getting ready i tried to put on the radio via the tv set. The TV remote was very grubby indeed. There were no radio stations available so I plumped for 4 music whilst I got changed, etc. I ended up turning this of as it just constantly pixelated and froze.

On the whole the hotel was quite noisy at night.

The hotel was noisy early morning, my room was situated above the breakfast room, I am a little unsure if staff were allowed to smoke somewhere nearby but I was awoken early with someone chatting "outside".

Lastly the breakfast, although the waitress was lovely and could not do enough, the breakfast was luke warm at best and the sausage did not seem cooked fully.

£75 is a lot of money for me, unfortunately this hotel did not meet expectations and I was disappointed. On speaking to other friends who stayed at the hotel, when they arrived, just prior to me, their room was also not ready. Perhaps there are not enough house keeping staff?
