Conveniently located hostel with friendly staff

This hostel is very conveniently located - from Madrid Barajas airport, I took the Airport Express bus and around 30 minutes later got off at the Plaza de Cibeles bus stop, from where it was just 5 minutes' walk to the hostel. The hostel is within walking distance of many tourist sites, such as Parque del Retiro and the Reino Sofia museum.

The hostel staff were friendly, although spoke limited English. My room was very big and the shared bathroom was clean and kept in a good condition. Wifi signal was good.

Overall, given the price that I had paid for my room, I was happy with my stay at Hostal Mirentxu.

I stayed here by myself after I decided to spend a couple more nights in Madrid & the original place I was staying could not accommodate. It was an interesting set up, beautiful "home" but there was no shared kitchen as I was used to in other hostels I stayed (or at least I didn't get the impression that it was.) Overall, for the price being so reasonable, the clean rooms/bathrooms were easily worth the stay, and found some food gems as I went out for my meals for those 2 days. All in all, for the location, price, cleanliness, I would stay there again.

Terrible customer service, "stole" my money

Based on the mostly good reviews of the hostel I tried to reserve a room for my trip with my girlfriend in Madrid for July. I made a mistake during the reservation process and I booked the room for the date when I made the reservation and for the next day (June). I have immediately contacted the hotel (within 5 minutes) that I have no intention to go to the hotel that day and the next day so please modify my reservation to the dates I originally wanted to book for.
The hotel did not contacted me back, I tried to reach them several times by phone and email, but they only responded 2 days after, exactly when my reservation ended. They said they won’t change my reservation because the dates already went by. When I draw their attention to the fact I have contacted them 5 minutes after I made the reservation to do not hold the room for me, they did not even responded.
I am aware the fact that the reservation was a non refundable one, and I do know what that policy means. However, I only made a mistake and tried to correct it immediately but it seems like they will never pay my money back and keep it for a service they never provided to me. This is a TERRIBLE customer service and it is about to ruin my whole trip with my girlfriend since we are on a really tight budget :(
The hotel seemed really nice but after that they basically “stole” our money, I do not recommend it.

Clean, good location

The value is good and location is great. Place is very clean and staff is friendly. Only down side is the thin walls. if you're trying you sleep and some one comes back late, you'll hear them walk and talk.
The weather was good when I was there so I didn't need ac or heat.

Can't recommend it

I chose it because of the good reviews that it had gotten. Usually the score is a decent indicator, but not in this case. The hostel is old and has a creepy feel to it somehow. At night the corridors are so dark that I even walked into a wall, sober! Fumbling in the dark to find the lock on the door to your room is also something that you shouldn't have to do. The whole place also has an unpleasant smell. The room didn't feel clean, especially the bed. During the evening and into the night there was an annoying sound from some machine (elevator, washing machine, I don't know) keeping me up. I simply do not understand those 4 and 5 star reviews at all. I will say however that the staff was nice, and the location is indeed great, but that's all the positive things I can think of. Maybe that's what you get for this price, but I've definitely been in much nicer hotels for a similar price.
