This place Sucks (Capital S)
behnton 07/11/2016 17:56I really don't even know where to begin with this place. Bottom line: avoid this place like the plague. I'd give it 0 stars if I could. One star is awfully generous.
My family and I arrived to this hotel very late at night, but I had made the reservation a couple weeks in advance. We arrived and I checked in. Then, the key that the receptionist gave us would not work on our door. 20 minutes, a pissed off wife and crying baby later, the groundskeeper gave us his key (reluctantly and with a sarcastic remark, oh the nerve) and we got in. This was after having to tiptoe around shattered glass outside of the room on the sidewalk (probably a violation, on more than one level).
We finally stumbled into the room, and were greeted with the worst smell we have ever experienced in our lives. A mix between moth balls, dead human, and stale food. It was as if we walked into the year 1986. Just overall dirty and smelly. The bathroom was a disgrace. Supposed to be a "nonsmoking" room but the toilet seat had cigarette burn marks all over it. Dead bugs on floor. The absolute very worst hotel room I have ever stepped into. No way did we want to get under those covers.
After a few minutes of apologizing to my wife, I was able to get a different room - in the Annex/external building, about 100 yards away. The room was a slight upgrade, a "suite", but still had a funky smell (some kind of insect killer?) and looked like a guest room in my grandma's house. We got a crappy 5 hours of sleep (tops) before we checked out the next morning. Lots of random tools were strewn about the property near this "Annex." Not really safe or attractive to look at.
I cancelled our second night's stay the night before and was promised a refund by the receptionist (since I cancelled 24 hours in advance). However, after a week, there was no refund on my card so I called in on two separate occasions. The first woman I spoke to told me totally disputed the refund I was promised and gave me no good reason (but plenty of attitude). The second woman I spoke to, a few days later, also decided that she wanted to argue. Both providing false and conflicting claims. On both calls I was promised a return phone call from the owner of the "hotel" but have not received any follow up at all.
In sum: choose Kingston Inn & Suites if you want the worst hotel experience of your life, from top to bottom. I want to say that they gave us the "worst" hotel room they had, but I'm pretty sure they're all terrible. Please avoid. Please.
Will be back
John Mon 10/10/2016 19:17Was very happy with this motel. Quiet and clean, free wi-fi, and they offered a light continental breakfast. A great value. Adding to my list of places to stay. Very friendly staff at check-in. My trip is on a motorcycle, and I had no worries about it being there overnight.
Great Experience
love2explore25on 06/10/2016 21:37We were not expecting much from this hotel and were actually surprised from the first moment by wonderful hospitality and great accommodations we received.
We were in town for the Parents' Weekend at W&L and when we were checking in, the ladies at the reception presented us with a goodie bag just for the parents. It was such a nice gesture and greatly appreciated!
We were given a renovated room in Building B which was super comfortable and spacious. The decorations were really cute, quaint and country style with a retro hair dryer ( a box on the wall with a hose) and an old-fashioned phone in the bathroom and a fridge/sink/stove combo that looked like something from the 80-s. The room was very clean, with a new fluffy carpet and a comfortable mattress.
The only negative was a very strong smell in the hallway from some cleaning liquid and a faint insecticide smell in the room. The room smell was bearable but I would suggest to air out the hallways now and then.
Another positive side of this hotel was the hospitality towards pets. Our cat was welcomed there for a small fee and actually did not want to leave the room, we had to drag him out when we were leaving.
The staff at the hotel are wonderful, very welcoming and ready to help. I already made reservations for the next year Parents' weekend and will try to stay there every time we visit our son in college. The price is the best in town as is the location, only 1.5 miles from the University in a very nice and quiet area.
College visit
Rosemary Bon 01/10/2016 19:18An older hotel on the come back trail!. We were in room 51 in building B and it was huge, freshly painted and new carpeting. Adequate for our one night stay and clean. The staff was extra friendly, helpful and welcoming! Love the out of town country location. Breakfast was sparse but at least it was something. A basic clean motel.
We left after 5 minutes in the room
SWCedon 14/09/2016 14:59The room was not acceptable. There was an overwhelming smell of mothballs, someone's socks under the corner of the bed, a utility knife on top of the mirror and the toilet was stained like someone had dumped dirt in it. We went back to the office, they explained, apologized and offered a room in another building.
Shortly after we left Expedia sent a message to me asking about the check in. I responded that I left due to smell and cleanliness. The Kingston Inn immediately responded with an apology, noted other reviews said it was clean, said they fired the housekeeper and offered of 15% off my next stay.
I feel bad for the housekeeper. Although the socks under the bed, knife over the mirror and the dirty toilet bowl were housekeeping issues the room should have been checked by someone before I got there. In addition, the mothball smell, mildew on the box-spring and apparent damage from the adjoining door being broken in were maintenance issues.
The smell was known to the front desk staff and was called a normal method of insect control. I have stayed in many hotels and homes in the South. That is the first time a room had an overwhelming smell of mothballs for that purpose. It made me think the problem was recent and acute.
I appreciate the offer of staying for a discounted rate. I also understand the rates are low so my expectations should be too. However, not that low and once a hotel has demonstrated a lack of customer service and care I don't go back for any price.
The front desk was pleasant, but I will not be going back there.
